GREENSBORO, N.C. (seminoles.com) - For the second week in a row a Florida State student-athlete has been recognized by the league office for their efforts on the soccer pitch. This week Tiffany McCarty has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week after her performance in two winning efforts last weekend.
McCarty scored seven points on three goals and an assist in leading No. 5 FSU to a pair of victories, including a road win over intra-state rival and No. 8 Florida.
McCarty had a hand in all three goals as the fifth-ranked Seminoles went on the road in front of 4,671 fans to beat the Gators, 3-2. McCarty assisted on the first goal of the game and then was a force to reckon with in the second half, scoring both of FSU's goals - including the game-winner in the 72nd minute. The deciding goal came less than five minutes after the Gators had tied the game at two.
After recording just one shot in the first half which hit off the crossbar, McCarty tallied five in the second half including three on goal and another off the post. The Laurel, Md., native outshot the Gators 5-4 in the second half, while her six shots equaled the total shots taken by UF for the entire match.
The redshirt junior scored her third goal of the week in FSU's 4-0 win over Mercer on Sunday. McCarty is the Seminole leader in goals (7), points (25) and shots (25) on the year. She has posted a .600 shots on goal percentage through the first eight games and is tied for the team lead with two game-winning goals.
This is the third career ACC weekly accolade for McCarty as she was honored twice in 2009.
McCarty was also named to TopDrawerSoccer.com's Team of the Week for her outstanding efforts last week.
McCarty and the third-ranked Seminoles open conference play this week with a pair of matches in the state of North Carolina. FSU will visit No. 13 Wake Forest on Thursday, September 15 in a nationally televised game set to start at 8:00 p.m. The Seminoles will then face No. 5 Duke on Sunday, September 18 at 1:00 p.m.
