TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - With the Florida State soccer season just over a month away from its season opener on August 21, many of the current Seminoles are spending their summer vacation fine tuning their skills in leagues across the country. Throughout the summer, Seminoles.com will provide fans an inside look at how the current Seminoles are performing both on and off the field.
Tiffany McCarty, Casey Short and Toni Pressley are currently participating in training camp with the U.S. U-20 Women's National Team in Boulder at the University of Colorado. Also in Colorado are incoming freshmen Kelsey Wys and Alex Crown who are taking part in training camp with the U-18 squad.
The U-18's defeated the Canadian U-20 team 5-1 in a friendly played in Boulder back on July 12. Wys started in goal for Team USA and played all 90 minutes recording four saves. The U.S. U-20 squad is schedule to play their northern rivals twice during their training session in Colorado. The U-20 camp concludes July 18, while the U-18 team will wrap-up its training session on July 16.
A combined 48 players from both the U-20 and U-18 squads will vie for a spot on the U.S. team that will attempt to qualify for the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Germany.
Former Seminole Erika Sutton has joined the Boston Breakers of the Women's Professional Soccer League. Sutton was acquired in a week long deal which allows her to be available for two Breakers games, on July 15 versus Chicago at home, and July 19 at FC Gold Pride. Sutton will return with the Buffalo Flash of the W-League before their playoff run on July 20.
This week marks the final week of the W-League regular season. Of the five teams with a current Seminole player on their roster, four have qualified for postseason play. Those four teams include the Chicago Red Eleven (Jessica Price, Casey Short, Lauren Switzer), the Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues (Amanda DaCosta, Erin McNulty), the Pali Blues (Ella Stephan) and the Washington Freedom (Becky Edwards, Tiffany McCarty, Toni Pressley).
