Aug. 29, 1997 FSU Women's Soccer Loses Season OpenerWINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Despite scoring the first goal, Florida State (0-1, 0-1 in the ACC) dropped a narrow 2-1 decision to Atlantic Coast Conference rival Wake Forest (1-0, 1-0 in the ACC) in both team's season opener at Spry Soccer Stadium. The Seminole jumped on the scoreboard first, as Erin Grimsley found the back of the net with a header off of a pass from Alex Osorio. Wake Forest scored their first goal when Ann Shropshire took a lead pass from Jesses Snyder and put it past FSU goalkeeper Melissa Juhl at the 20:22 mark. The Deacons took the lead for good when Karli Schilling tipped in a corner kick from Shropshire 32:11 into the first half. Both teams were scoreless in the second half. Three Seminoles were yellow carded in a very defensive game. Both keepers had eight saves apiece, while the Deacons outshot FSU 17-9. Janna Walkup and two freshmen Ashley Halter and Dee Foard received warnings. FSU next travels to Appalachian State for a Sunday match up.
