TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) - Kayla Jones, who was named to the 2013 Rolex Junior All-America team, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play women's golf for head coach Amy Bond at Florida State. Jones was one of 48 girls named to the Rolex All-America team which recognizes the world's premier junior golfers.
Jones (Milton, Ga./Milton High School) signed her NLI in front of family and friends in the gymnasium of her high school where she has become one of the nation's top junior golfers. She led Milton to its first state championship in women's golf as she finished in third place in the individual standings at the state championship tournament in 2012 and played in a qualifying round for the U.S. Women's Open at age 14.
"It has been my dream to play college golf since I was 5 years old and I wouldn't want to do it anywhere else," said Jones. "It feels great to be a Florida State Seminole!"
Jones began building her golf resume at age four and has steadily become one of the top junior golfers in the nation as evidenced by her Rolex Junior Golf All-America distinction in 2013. Her junior golf accolades include individual championships at the Forest Hills Junior Classic in 2010, the Glen Arvin Junior Classic in 2012 and the Innisbrook Junior Classic in 2013. In nine events on the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour since 2010, she has finished no lower than fifth and has earned six top three individual finishes. In AJGA events in 2013 she finished in the top three in two different events and in fourth place in another event.
In addition to leading Milton to the 2012 state championship, she led her high school team to appearances in the state championship tournament in 2011 (third place team finish) and 2013 (second place team finish), she won the individual regional championship in 2013 and led Milton to the Georgia High School Association 6A Region 5 championship in 2012. Jones led Milton to a second place finish in the state championship and finished in second place in the individual standings (she lost the championship in a playoff) in 2013. She led the Eagles to seven tournament championships in 2012. Jones has been ranked among the top players in the state of Georgia including a No. 4 ranking in 2013.
Jones was named the overall Girls' Grand Champion and the Player of the Year at the Druid Hills Golf Club of Atlanta in 2012. She will graduate from Milton in 2014 and begin her studies at Florida State during the fall of 2014.
"We are very excited to have Kayla join our team," said Bond. "She is a great player and is just starting to come into her own on the golf course. I am looking for big things from her and am looking forward to watching her excel as a Seminole."
Florida State opens its 2014 spring schedule at the Florida Challenge on Jan. 27 at Black Diamond Golf Club in Lecanto, Fla. The Seminoles play host to the Second Annual Florida State Match-up (Feb. 14-16) and the NCAA East Regional Championship (May 8-10) at Southwood Golf Course in Tallahassee during the spring season.
