Stepping Into The Tee Box With Seminole Golfer Whitney Wright

Sept. 13, 2007

Whitney Wright, a senior leader on the Florida State women's golf team, has been a member of two NCAA Tournament teams during the first three years of her Seminole career. She has played in 26 events and is the second most experienced player on the Seminoles' roster as the 2007-08 begins. Wright carded her career-low single-round score of 68 in the first round of the Cougar Classic earlier this week and is working towards playing well in the upcoming Tar Heel Invitational in October. She sat down with seminoles.com between classes this week and talked about who she admires, what her goals are and what she would do with $10 million.

Describe yourself in 4 words.
The best four words that describe me are energetic, down-to-earth, sensitive and brave.

Most significant thing that has ever happened to you was...
...The most significant thing that I can point to in my life was being saved by Jesus.

You are stranded in a raft out in the middle of the ocean, choose three things that you would have with you and tell us why.
I would want to have enough bottled water with us for as long as we needed before we were saved, a hat to keep the sun off my face and my boyfriend for company.

If you had ten million dollars, what would you do with it all?
If I won $10 million I would finish school, give money to my parents so they could retire and then travel all over the world for as long as I wanted.

Do you relate more with Michelle Wee, Anika Sorenstam, Betsy King or Paula Creamer? Why?
As sad as it is, I don't really relate to many female golfers. I watch a lot more men's golf on television than I do women's golf. I relate to Tiger Woods because I've had a lot of people tell me I could never make it in golf during my career. He has taught me to keep pushing on - just like he has and look at him now.

What was the most exciting moment at the Cougar Classic? What is something you wish you could have done differently during the event.
My most exciting moment was playing my first round as a senior. That is a moment I won't forget. I shot a career-low 68 and was very pleased with my performance. I wish I could have finished better in the tournament. I struggled the last day after I made a big number on my fourth hole. I could never mentally get it back together after that.

What are you doing to prepare for the Lady Tar Heel Invitational?
I am going to practice my driver more. I missed a lot of fairways that cost me on the last day during the Cougar Classic.

What are your individual and team goals for this season?
"My individual goal is to win a tournament and my goal, along with my teammates, is for us to win as many tournaments as possible.

Tell us three of the most interesting/funniest things about Coach Debbie Dillman?
Coach Dillman lives on Diet Coke and snacks on anything she can get her hands on during a tournament. She gets wings in her hair when she puts her hat on and it is windy on the course.

What do you do enjoy doing while traveling to golf tournaments with the team?
We play all types of games - catchphrase is one of our favorites -- watch movies in the van and eat a lot of snacks.

How would you describe the ladies on your team?
We are all very competitive, funny and a loud group of people.

What is your favorite piece of Florida State gear?
My favorite piece of gear has to be our new rio orange shorts or our crazy pink tie-dye shirt.

What are the two best things about Don A. Veller Seminole Golf Course?
We really enjoy playing at Seminole because we know where every bump is out on that course and the food in the grill is great.
