PINEHURST, N.C. - Florida State junior Whitney Brummett won her first round match at the 104th North and South U.S. Amateur Championship Wednesday and will play Jennifer Hong of Evanston, Ill., in the second round of match play on Pinehurst No. 8 on Thursday. Brummett defeated Chris Brady of Stanley, N.C. 2 and 1 to advance in the tournament.

While Brummett advanced on, Seminole teammates Jaclyn Burch and Erica Gonzalez were defeated in their first round matches.

Brummett began play on Thursday morning against Hong who won her first round match 1 up.

Brummett needs to earn victories in Thursday's third round, Friday's quarterfinal round and Saturday's semifinal round to advance to the championship round on Saturday afternoon. Ya-Ni Tseng, the defending tournament champion, won her match 4 and 2 to advance to the second round.

Brummett will begin her third season as a member of the Seminoles' starting lineup looks during the fall 2006 season. She helped lead Florida State to the NCAA Championship for the first time during her career in 2006 and led the Seminoles to a 16th place national standing. Brummett was named to the National Golf Coaches Association Scholar Athlete Team in 2006.
