Florida State, which is ranked 41st nationally, looks to continue its climb into the upper echelon of the national rankings as it travels to play in the 2014 Bryan National Collegiate at the Champions Course at the Bryan Park Golf and Enrichment Center in Greensboro, N.C. March 28-30, 2014. The Seminoles enter play this weekend with three top-five team finishes in its first seven events of the 2013-14 fall and spring seasons and have earned victories over No. 5 Oklahoma (at the Lady Gator Invitational), No. 15 Pepperdine (at the Schooner Fall Classic), No. 18 Florida (at the Florida Challenge and the Lady Gator Invitational), No. 26 Miami (Florida Challenge), No. 30 Virginia (at the Florida State Match-Up), No. 32 Texas A&M (Florida State Match-Up) and will face nine teams ranked in the nation's top 30 at the Bryan National Collegiate this weekend.
THE 2014 BRYAN NATIONAL COLLEGIATE FIELD
No. 41 Florida State is joined by No. 3 Duke, No. 8 South Carolina, No. 11 Clemson, No. 19 Northwestern, No. 20 Wake Forest, No. 22 Michigan State, No. 23 NC State, No. 27 Ohio State, No. 30 Virginia, College of Charleston, Louisville, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, Penn State and Tennessee in the 2014 Bryan National Collegiate at the Champions Course at the Bryan Park and Golf and Enrichment Center in Greensboro, N.C. The national rankings are courtesy of GolfStat. The Par 72, 6,386 yard course was designed by Rees Jones and opened in 1990. The course was ranked in 1990 as the runner-up best new public course in the country by Golf Digest and has since been ranked nationally each year by major golf publications. Virginia is in the field as it attempts to become the first team since Duke in 2004 and 2005 to repeat as the team champion while a new individual champion will be crowned in 2014. Emilie Burger of Georgia won the Individual championship in 2014.
NOTING FLORIDA STATE AT THE BRYAN NATIONAL COLLEGIATE
Florida State, which won the team championship of the Bryan National Collegiate in 2010, is one of four ACC teams which has won the team championship at this tournament...the Seminoles are joined by Duke (seven championships, most recent in 2012), Wake Forest (two championships, most recent in 2011) and Virginia (one championship, most recent in 2013)...in winning the team championship in 2010, the Seminoles posted an 873 team score...their score that season not only won them the team championship but would have won the team championship in 11 of the first 15 seasons the Bryan National Collegiate...Florida State has finished in the top 10 of the team standings during six of the nine years it has participated in the Bryan National Collegiate...former Florida State star Jessica Negron (2010-13) is one of only 17 golfers who have played in the history of the Bryan National Collegiate who has earned individual top 10 finishes in consecutive years...Negron finished in a tie for fifth place in 2012 and in sixth place in the individual standings in 2013...the best finish in the individual standings at the Bryan National Collegiate is fifth - sole possession of fifth place by Macarena Silva in 2010 and a tie for fifth place by Negron in 2012.
SEMINOLES' CASTREN RANKED 17TH NATIONALLY BY GOLFSTAT
Florida State's Matilda Castren enters the 2014 Bryan National Collegiate ranked 17th nationally in the GolfStat Cup standings. In 17 rounds during the first six events of her collegiate career, Castren is averaging 71.76 strokes per round and has earned five consecutive top 10 finishes. Castren has earned three eighth place finishes (tied for eighth at the Lady Paladin Invitational, Schooner Fall Classic and Lady Gator Invitational) in addition to her pair of top two finishes this spring. She was named the ACC Golfer of the Month for January and February for her performances in the Florida Challenge (tied for second) and the Florida State Match-Up (individual champion).
KUHLO ESTABLISHES CAREER BESTS AT LADY GATOR INVITATIONAL
Junior Carlton Kuhlo earned the best finish of her career as she finished in a tie for 13th place in the individual standings at the Lady Gator Invitational. She established personal bests for single round score (68 in the first round) and career finish (tied for 13th) while tying her career best scores for 36 holes (145) and for a three round tournament score (219) in the event. Kuhlo has now finished in the top 20 in each of her three events during the spring season. She enters the Bryan National Collegiate averaging a career-low 74.50 strokes in 14 rounds during five events this year - nearly four strokes below her career average of 78.12 strokes in 33 rounds during 12 events in the first two seasons of her Seminole career.
SEMINOLES TO HOST 2014 NCAA EAST REGIONAL
Florida State will play host to the NCAA East Regional Championship as part of the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship May 8-10, 2014 at Southwood Golf Club in Tallahassee.
