TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) -
Florida State opens its 2014 spring season as it plays in the Second Annual Florida Challenge at the Black Diamond Ranch Golf Club in Lecanto, Fla. The Seminoles finished in second place in the team standings at last season's event and return to the event looking for their first team victory of the year. Florida State earned three top10 team finishes during its four match fall season with its best finish of tied for fifth place coming at the Lady Paladin Invitational. The Seminoles will play host to two events during the spring of 2014: The Second Annual Florida State Match-Up (Feb. 14-16, 2014) and the NCAA East Regional (May 8-10, 2014) with both events taking place at Southwood Golf Course in Tallahassee.
THE 2013 FLORIDA CHALLENGE FIELD
Florida State is joined by Florida, Florida International, Miami, UCF and USF in the Second Annual Florida Challenge. Florida defeated Florida State by nine strokes to earn the team championship of the inaugural event with Miami finishing in third, UCF in fourth and USF in fifth. Camilla Hedberg of Florida and Monica Sealy of UCF shared the individual championship with identical scores of 1-under par 143. The event will be played on the Quarry Course at Black Diamond which was designed in 1987 by famed golf course architect Tom Fazio.
IMPRESSIVE START BY FRESHMAN CASTREN
Freshman Matilda Castren, (Espoo, Finland) was Florida State's leader during the three events she played during the fall 2013 season. Castren averaged a team-leading 72.56 strokes in her first nine career rounds as a Seminole and finished in the top eight of the individual standings in her final two events of the season (the Lady Paladin Invitational and the Schooner Fall Classic). She carried her low score for the season during the Schooner Fall Classic as she shot a 69 in the final round.
GREAT FALL BY MILAN
Junior Alex Milan (Lutz, Fla.) played in all four of the Seminoles' fall events and earned the third top-20 finish of her career - tied for 17th -- at the fall season opening Mo Morial Invitational. Milan continued to play well during the fall and earned another top 25 individual finish - tied for 22nd - at the Schooner Fall Classic. She earned the best single round score of her career (70 in the final round of the Schooner Classic) and totaled the lowest tournament score of her career (220 at the Schooner Classic) in the third event of the fall 2013 season. Milan averaged a career best 75.50 strokes per round a total which was more than two strokes below her scoring average in her first two years as a Seminole. Milan carded her first eagle as a Seminole during the first round of the Alamo Invitational.
KUHLO PLAYS HER BEST AT ALAMO INVITATIONAL
Junior Carlton Kuhlo (Tallahassee, Fla.) set numerous personal bests at the Alamo Invitational -- the final event of fall. Kuhlo enjoyed the best tournament of her career as she set personal bests for single round score (69 in the first round), 36 holes (145 in the first two rounds), tournament score (219) and score vs. par (+3) as she finished in a tie for 32nd place in the individual standings in the event. She finished as the Seminoles' leader at the Alamo Invitational for the first time in her 14-match collegiate career. Kuhlo averaged a career best 75.00 stroked per round in the fall season - nearly six strokes below her scoring average of 80.56 strokes per round in the first two years ofCASTELAIN NAMED SEMINOLES' TEAM CAPTAIN FOR 2013-14
Junior Laure Castelain (Bordeaux, France) will serve as the Seminoles' team captain for the 2013-14 season. She has played in 22 of 23 events during her career and has been the Seminoles' leader in four different events including the first event of her career - the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at the University of Oklahoma during the fall of 2011.
CASTREN PLAYS IN THE SPIRIT INVITATIONAL
Matilda Castren represented her native country of Finland in the 2013 Spirit Invitational Amateur Golf Championship Oct. 28-Nov. 3 at the Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas. The Spirit International is a world class amateur event featuring 20 countries from six continents. Each country was represented by its two top men and two top women players. The Spirit is a biennial event alternating years with the World Amateur Team Championships.
SEMINOLES TO HOST 2014 NCAA EAST REGIONAL
Florida State will play host to the NCAA East Regional Championship as part of the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship May 8-10, 2014 at Southwood Golf Club in Tallahassee.
