Women's Golf Opens Spring Season At Florida Challenge
Seminoles open season with plenty of optimism.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) -
Florida State, which has played in a school record seven consecutive NCAA Championship Tournaments, continues its quest for an eighth consecutive appearance as it opens its spring schedule at the Inaugural Florida Challenge - a one-day, 36-hole challenge featuring five of the top teams in the state of Florida on January 28. 2013. The Seminoles are joined by Florida, UCF, USF and Miami in the event which will be played at the Quarry Course at the Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, Fla.
THE 2013 FLORIDA CHALLENGE FIELD
Florida State is joined by No. 5 Florida, Miami, UCF and USF in the inaugural Florida Challenge. The event will be played on the Quarry Course at the Black Diamond Ranch - a course designed by Thomas Fazio and opened in 1987. The course has consistently been rated as one of the top courses in the nation and was rated as the No. 2 course in the state of Florida by Golf Digest - which has recognized the Quarry Course as one of America's 100 greatest courses for the last 19 years. The event will be played as a two-round, 36-hole event with the winning team earning the Florida Challenge Cup which will be recognized as a travelling award.
A GOOD START FOR NEGRON'S SENIOR YEAR
Senior Jessica Negron led the Seminoles through the fall season with a scoring average of 74.86. The three-time NCAA Championships participant led Florida State to an eighth place finish in the team standings at the Mercedes Benz Collegiate Championship where she finished with an even par score of 216 and in a tie for seventh place in the individual standings. Negron carded a 1-under par score of 71 in the final round to pull the Seminoles into eighth place in the final standings. Her seventh place finish marked the seventh top 10 finish of her career. It was Negron's best finish since placing in a tie for seventh at the spring 2012 ACC Championships. Negron enters the spring season having finished in the top eight of the individual standings in three of her last five events dating back to the spring 2012 season.
HULLERT CONTRIBUTES AS A FRESHMAN
Olivia Hullert earned an impressive start as a Seminole as she earned a spot in the lineup in all three fall events for the Seminoles. She finished as the Seminole leader during the Landfall Tradition - Florida State's final event of the fall season. Hullert finished the fall season with the second best scoring average after senior Negron with 75.71 average in seven rounds. Hullert's best tournament finish came during the Mercedes Benz Collegiate Championship when she carded her career best 1 under par 71 in the final round and finished in a tie for 27th place with a three-round total of 222. She carded a personal tournament high six birdies and was at or below par on 14 of her 18 holes played during the third round.
CASTELAIN CONTINUES TO PLAY WELL AS A SOPHOMORE
Laure Castelain continued her strong play during the fall 2012 season as she picked up where she left off her stellar spring 2012 season. Her best finish during the fall season came at the GolfWeek Challenge as she as Florida State's leader with an individual finish of tied for 28th. It marked the third time during the start of her career that she had finished as Florida State's leading golfer. The tied for 28th gave her the sixth top 30 finish of her career and the fifth top 30 finish in her last six events dating back to the spring of 2012 season.
DIFFERENT SEMINOLE LEADERS
Displaying the depth that second year head coach Amy Bond is quickly developing, Florida State finished its three tournaments with four different individual leaders during the fall 2012 season. The Seminoles were led by Jessica Negron at the Mercedes Benz Collegiate Championship (tied for seventh), Laure Castelain at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic and Olivia Hullert and Alex Milan at the Landfall Tradition.
