KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (seminoles.com) - Florida State senior Jessica Negron shot an even par 72 and is in a tie for eighth place in the individual standings and the Seminole women's golf team is in a tie for sixth place in the team standings after the first round of the 16th Annual Mercedes Benz Collegiate Championship at the Holston Hills Country Club. Negron carded four birdies and 14 holes at par or better and was never more than 1 stroke over par in leading the Seminoles through the first of three rounds in the tournament. Florida State led the team standings through their first nine holes of the round and finished a cumulative total of 3 strokes under par on the first half of the course. Negron led a Seminole charge that helped the Garnet and Gold count four scores at 75 or better and finished its first round with a season best team score of 294. Negron (even), sophomore Alex Milan (1 over par), freshman Olivia Hullert (2 over par) and sophomore Laure Castelain (3 over par) have the Seminoles positioned well for the final two rounds of play as they are only three strokes behind the leaders - Penn State and Texas A&M. - who both carded team scores of 291. Hana Lee of Northwestern holds the individual lead as she finished the round with a 3 under par score of 69. "We were able to get under par early and that gave each of the girls a lot of confidence," said head coach Amy Bond. "We did a lot of things very well today - we have to finish the final six holes much better than we did today and we should be in good shape." Negron (Ocala, Fla.) began the round with three birdies on her first eight holes and reached her apex of 1 stroke under par just before making the turn to the front side (she began play on hole No. 10). She then finished the round at even par over the final nine holes including 1 under over her final three holes of the round. It marked the second consecutive round she shot 72 or better after shooting a 71 in the final round of the season opening GolfWeek Challenge. Sophomore Alex Milan played perhaps her best round of golf as a Seminole as she carded a 1 over par score of 73 - the second best round of her 21 round career. She carded a team high five birdies with all five coming on her first seven holes of the afternoon and helping her to a 4 under par score at the turn. Milan carded 13 holes at par or better and was above par for a total of one hole during the entire round. Milan's best career round of 72 came in the third round of the fall 2011 Susie Maxwell Berning Classic - the third round of her career in the first tournament of her career. Hullert (Baerum, Norway) played the best round of her short career as she carded a two over par score of 74 while Laure Castelain (Bordeaux, France) carded a 3 over par score of 75. Hullert is in a tie for 22nd place with Castelain is in a tie for 31st place. "This is the first time in a long that we have given ourselves the opportunity to compete for a tournament championship," said Bond. "We will begin play in the second round playing ahead and that is a good feeling for our entire team . I like the position we are in and we all feel we can play well from the middle of the pack in the second round." 16th Annual Mercedes Benz Collegiate Championship/Oct. 12-14, 2012/Par 72 Holston Hills Country Club/Knoxville, Tenn./First Round Florida State Results T6/16.
