GolfWeek Challenge -- Third Rd
WOLCOTT, Colo. (seminoles.com) - Florida State senior Jessica Negron shot a 1 under par 71 to finish with her best score of the tournament and led the Seminole women's golf team to a 10th place finish in the final team standings as play in the Fourth Annual GolfWeek Challenge came to a close at the Red Sky Golf Club. Negron finished in 44th place in the individual standings. Pepperdine, which held or shared the lead in each of the three rounds of the tournament, won the team championship with a five stroke victory over UC Davis. The Waves defeated defending champion Oklahoma by 21 strokes. Demi Rumas of UC Davis, who took over the lead in the second round, won the individual championship with a 7 over par total of 209. She defeated Fabiola Arriaga of Texas San Antonio by three strokes. "I am pleased with how we rebounded in the final round," said head coach Amy Bond. "I am especially happy for Jess who played really well today. Her play in this round should certainly get her going for the rest of the fall and moving in the right direction for the rest of the year. We had some good performances by our younger players who gained some invaluable experience and who will leave here with a lot to build on as we continue the fall schedule." Negron (Ocala, Fla.) rebounded nicely in the final round after two sub-par rounds to lead the Seminoles on the final day and finish as one of only 11 golfers in the 90-player field to score below par in the third round. Negron carded three birdies (she totaled four in the first two rounds of the event) and 13 more holes at par in the final round. She was never above par and was as many as two strokes below par during the round. Following scores of even par on her first four holes of the afternoon, Negron was 1 under par over her final 14 holes with three birdies. Negron improved her individual score by 10 strokes in the final round after carding an uncharacteristic 81 in the second round. Florida State was led on its leaderboard during the tournament by Laure Castelain (Bordeaux, France) who finished in a tie for 28th place in the individual standings. The Seminole sophomore finished with her best score of the tournament in the final round (a 1 over par 73) and completed the event with an 8 over par score of 224. Castelain finished the round at 1 under par over her final 15 holes of the round. Castelain finished as Florida State's leading golfer for the third time in her career as she earned the sixth top 30 finish of her career and the fifth top 30 finish in her last six events. Sophomore Carlton Kuhlo (Tallahassee, Fla.) carded a 4 over par score of 76 in the final round and finished in a tie for 39th place in the individual standings with a 229 total. In earning the second top 40 finish of her career, Kuhlo carded two birdies and 11 holes scored at par. She closed the tournament at even par with two birdies and nine holes at par over her final 13 holes of the third round. Florida State will play in its second of three events during the fall season as it travels to play at the Mercedes Benz Collegiate Championship at the Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn., Oct. 12-14, 2012.
