Castren carded a 1-over par 73 in the final round and finished with an even par total of 216. She finished only four strokes out of fifth place and only seven strokes out of first place.
Wisconsin stormed from behind in the third round to surpass both Georgia Regents University and Clemson to win the team championship. The Badgers began the final day in third place in the team standings and shot a 7-under par team score of 281 to finish ahead of Clemson by two strokes. Wisconsin finished with two in the top five and three in the top 11 of the individual standings. Ashlan Ramsey of Clemson won the individual championship as she earned a three stroke victory over Eunice Yi of Georgia Regents (formerly Augusta State) to win the first individual championship in Clemson history.
"We didn't have the finish we would have liked and now we have two weeks to get ready for the University of Oklahoma Tournament," said head coach Amy Bond. "We started pretty well today and gave some shots back late in the round. We have lots to work on but there were some real positives this weekend - two of our freshmen (Castren and Anna Sophia Böhmer) finished in the top 10 and Matilda earned the first top 10 finish of her career."
Castren (Espoo, Finland) closed the event with a 1-over par score of 73 and finished the tournament with an even par score of 216. She set personal bests for finish (tied for eighth), single round score (70 in the second round), 36-hole total (143) and tournament score (216). Castren has now finished as Florida State's top player in both of its early season tournaments - tied for 15th in the season opening Mo Morial Invitational and tied for eighth in this Lady Paladin Invitational. Her finish in this week's tournament marked the first top-10 individual finish by a Seminole this fall.
"I felt like I did a good job finishing well on the last four holes after struggling with my putter for the early part of the round," said Castren. "Early on I wasn't getting my putts to fall and I was making bogeys."
Castren carded a personal tournament high five birdies in finishing with her 2-over par score of 73 in Sunday's final round. She was at or below par for 14 of the 18 holes she played and was never more than two strokes over par during the round. Castren closed well as she was 1-under over her final four holes of the round.
"I feel that my overall game at this tournament was better than it was at the Mo Morial," said Castren. "I hit the ball better in this tournament so I had more birdie opportunities. Also my drives were better, in the fairway more often and I never really got into trouble because my drives were better."
Junior Carlton Kuhlo (Tallahassee, Fla.), who was playing in the event as an individual, played her best golf of the tournament in the third round. She carded a career-low tying 73 in the final round - a seven stroke improvement from her score in the second round, Kuhlo finished in a tie for 50th place in the individual standings of her first tournament of the fall.
Three players - freshman Anna Sophia Böhmer (Cali, Colombia), junior Laure Castelain (Bordeaux, France) and freshman Lydia Gumm (Radcliff, Ky.) finished with scores of 75 in the final round. Böhmer earned the top individual finish of the three as she place in a tie for 19th in the final individual standings. Her finish of tied for 19th was a 12 place improvement over her tied for 31st place finish in her first career event - the Mo Morial Invitational.
"It's time to put a lot of work into our short games and get prepared for Oklahoma," concluded Bond.
The Seminoles will play in the Schooner Classic sponsored by country music star Toby Keith and the University of Oklahoma Oct 5-7 Norman, Okla., in their third of four fall events.
