HANAHAN, S.C. - Florida State sophomore Jaclyn Burch is tied for 35th in the individual standings and the Seminole women's golf team is in 15th place in the team standings after the first two rounds of the Cougar Fall Classic at Yeamans Hall Country Club. Burch completed the first 36 holes of the event with an eight-over par score of 152 and begins play in Tuesday's third and final round only six strokes from jumping into the top-10 in the individual standings.
Tennessee, ranked No. 12 in GolfWorld Magazine's preseason poll, leads the team standings after the first two rounds with a five-over par score of 581. The Lady Vols were in second place behind Louisiana State after the first round but finished three stokes better than the Lady Tigers to take the lead in to the third round. Violete Retamoza of Tennessee leads the individual standings with a five-under par score of 169.
Burch (Wildwood, Mo.) played her best round of the day with a two-over par 74 in the first round. She recorded a pair of birdies, 13 pars and played only three holes over par during the first 18 holes. In shooting a six-over par 78 in the second round, she played 13 holes at par or better. Burch is one of two returning starters for the Seminoles who have played in the NCAA Championship and earned two top-20 national finishes in the last two seasons.
Burch was followed by a trio of newcomers to the Florida State program. Freshmen Whitney Wright (Rockingham, N.C.) and Whitney Brummett (Eureka, Mo.) are tied for 57th and 70th respectively. Wright finished her first day as a collegiate golfer with a 13-over par score of 157 while Brummett finished her first two collegiate rounds with a 16-over par total of 160. Junior Kristin Sordel (Windermere, Fla.) is tied with Brummett with a 160 two-round total. Junior Caroline Larsson (Danderyd, Sweden) is tied for 79th after rounds of 83 and 82.
The final round of the 54-hole tournament begins Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
