BRYAN, Texas (seminoles.com) - Junior Alex Milan carded a career low single round score of 71 and has moved into a tie for 15th place in the individual standings and the Seminole women's golf team is in sixth place in the team standings with one round remaining to be played in the Mo Morial Invitational on the Traditions Course at Texas A&M University. Milan enters Wednesday's final round playing for her third career top 15 finish.
Milan (Lutz, Fla.) and freshman Matilda Castren (Espoo, Finland) are tied in the individual standings with identical 36-hole scores of 149. Milan has single round scores of 78-71 and Castren has finished the first two days with scores of 75-74. Milan began the first round in a tie for 45th place in the individual standings and moved up 29 spaces in the standings with her career best score of 71. Milan and Castren are within two strokes of moving into the top 10 of the individual standings and are within four strokes of moving in to the top five.
Kentucky played the best team round of the second day and moved into first place in the team standings. The Wildcats hold an eight stroke advantage over Virginia and Texas A&M heading into the third and final round. Haley Mills of Kentucky carded a 2-under par score of 70 and has a one stroke lead over teammate Sarah Harris and Katerina Rucickova of Virginia Tech.
Milan carded her first collegiate sub-par round as she finished with a 1-under par score of 71. She carded three birdies and 16 holes at par or better during the round. Milan was never above par and was as many as two strokes under par during her round. With six holes scored at par and two birdies she was two under par after her first eight holes and closed her round at one under par over her final five holes of the round.
"I feel like I did a good job of putting the ball in the best places around the greens to be successful today," said Milan. "When I went astray my putting picked up the slack."
Milan's below par round was her best since carding an even par 72 in the first round of the Florida Challenge on Jan. 28, 2013, and marked the fourth time in her career that she has carded a score of 73 or better.
Castren continued to play well in the first event of her Seminole career as she carded a 2-over par score of 74 - one stroke better than her score of 75 during the first round of the event. She led the team with four birdies in the second round and has totaled a team-leading seven birdies in the first two rounds. Castren was 1-under par with two birdies and one bogey on her first nine holes (each of the five Seminoles started the round on hole No. 10) and was two under par with two birdies and three holes scored at par over her final five holes of the round.
Three Seminoles -- Laure Castelain, Anna Sophia Böhmer and Lydia Gumm - are all tied for 40th place in the individual standings with identical scores of 154. Böhmer and Gumm totaled scores of 77 and Castelain finished with a 79 in the second round. "We played better golf as a team today," said head coach Amy Bond. "We are really looking forward to tomorrow and continuing to move up the leaderboard. All of the girls did a good job of course management today and we want to see them all play to their strengths on Wednesday. If we all do that we can finish with a solid round and a well-played tournament."
Florida State will play with UCF and East Carolina in the third and final round which begins as a shotgun start of 9:00 a.m. EDT on Wednesday.
