BRYAB, Texas (seminoles.com) - Junior Laure Castelain and freshman Matilda Castren shot identical scores of 3 over par 75 and are tied for 19th place in the individual standings and the Florida State Women's Golf team is in a tie for seventh place in the team standings after the first round of the Mo Morial Invitational at the Traditions Club.

Florida State is playing its season opening event with two upperclassmen (Castelain and junior Alex Milan) and three freshmen (Castren, Lydia Gumm and Anna Sophia Böhmer) in its' five-player line-up.

Texas A&M, the host school for the event, leads the team standings and holds a four stroke advantage over Kentucky. Haley Mills of Kentucky is the individual leader after the first round; she shot a 2 under par score of 70. Mills is one of six players in the field of 70 individuals who recorded a below par score in the first round. Florida State is one of only two ACC teams playing in the event and is only eight strokes behind No. 16 ranked Virginia which is in fourth place after the first of three rounds scheduled to be played.

"We did not play our best golf today, but we learned a lot about each of our players today," said head coach Amy Bond. "We played really well in the middle of the round - we need to get off to a better start and we need to finish much better. We are looking forward to tomorrow because it is another opportunity for each of us to improve and put together a complete round."

Castelain (Bordeaux, France) played her final 14 holes of the round at even par with three birdies and eight holes scored at par. She closed her round well with birdies on holes No. 15 and 16 and a 1 under par total on her final eight holes. Castelain was tied with Castren and Bohmer for the team lead with three birdies during the round.

Castren (Espoo, Finland) also played well during her first round as a Seminole as she was even par over her final 11 holes of the round With consecutive birdies on holes No. 12 and 13, the Seminole newcomer lowered her score to one over par with four holes to play. Castren carded 14 holes at par or better with three birdies during the round.

Böhmer (Cali, Colombia) also player well after shaking off the nervousness of her first collegiate event and was even par over her final 12 holes of the round. She, too, carded three birdies and 11 total holes at par or better. Gumm (Radcliff, Ky.) was the Seminoles' most consistent golfer as she finished with 14 holes scored at par including a streak of nine consecutive holes scored at par. She was only two strokes over par through her first 16 holes of the round.

"One of the main things we have to do is get the freshmen more playing time," said Bond. "The experience they need to gain with come with time and more rounds played. I was very encouraged with a lot of what I saw today. Our future is bright and we are close to getting better as individual players and as a team."

Florida State will play with Texas San Antonio and the Texas A&M "B" squad in Tuesday's second round of play. The round is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am EDT.
