Negron Embraces New Role
PALO ALTO, Calif. (seminoles.com) - Florida State senior Jessica Negron shot a 1 over par 72 and is in a tie for 15th place in the individual standings and the Seminole women's golf team is in a tie for 22nd place in the team standings after the first round of the NCAA Division I West Regional Championships on the Stanford University Golf Course. With two rounds remaining to be played, the Seminoles must improve over the next two rounds and move into the top eight of the team standings to advance to the NCAA Championship finals May 21-24 at the University of Georgia.
Negron, meanwhile, needs to finish as one of the top two finishing individual players not on one of the top eight advancing teams to play in the NCAA Championships as an individual. She is currently in a group of nine players who are vying for the two individual positions on teams who are not currently in the top eight of team standings.
No. 7 ranked Vanderbilt holds a one stroke lead over Southern California after the first round of the team race. The top eight teams are all within one stroke of the lead with the top 15 teams within 12 strokes of the lead. Anne Park of Southern California is the overall team leader with a 4 under par score of 67. She leads Emilie Berger of Georgia by one stroke.
"After a rough start we settled in played pretty well in the middle holes," said head coach Amy Bond. "We didn't finish the round as well as we hoped we would. We need to minimize our mistakes and do a better job of course management tomorrow. It's now time to play 36 holes of inspire golf which can be done if we stay positive and believe on each other."
Negron, an All-ACC selection in 2013, performed as Florida State's top golfer just as she has done throughout her senior season. She was nearly flawless over her first 10 holes with nine holes scored a par with one birdie and was 1 under par heading into her final eight holes of the round. Negron (Ocala, Fla.) close the round with five holes scored at par or better with one birdie - but counted three bogeys. She was even par of her final five holes with three pars, one birdie and one bogey.
"I was rolling along well early on and I was very confident in every aspect of my game," said Negron. "Late in the round I began to miss the greens and this course is very unforgiving if you miss the greens. Tomorrow is going to be a different day because I am going to learn from my mistakes and play well throughout the round. I am very excited about tomorrow because I know we can all play better - and we will."
Negron's round of 72 is her second best career regional round score. She carded a 69 in the first round of the 2011 NCAA East Regional Championship. Negron is also looking to finish as Florida State's leader in a regional championship for the third time in her career and earn her third top 25 regional championship finish. She finished in a career best tied for third place at the 2011 regional championship. She has now carded seven rounds with scores at 72 or better this spring.
Sophomore Laure Castelain (Bordeaux, France) tied her career best score for a single round in an NCAA regional championship while sophomore Carlton Kuhlo (Tallahassee, Fla.) carded a 79 in her first career NCAA regional championship round.
The Seminoles will play with Cal and Miami for the second consecutive round and will tee off of hole No. 1 at 7:30 a.m.. PST.
