GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Seminole Sophomore Macarena Silva and freshman Hannah Thomson carded identical scores of 73 to lead the Florida State women's golf team through the second round of the NCAA Division I East Regional Championship at the Mark Bostick Golf Course at the University of Florida. Silva is in a tie for 46th place and Thomson is in a tie for 54th place in the individual standings. The Seminoles are in 16th place in the team standings heading into the third and final round of competition on Saturday.

The Seminoles need to move up eight spaces in the team standings to finish as one of the top eight teams in the final standings in order to qualify for the NCAA championship round May 19-22 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings, Mills, Md.

"We came back a little bit today and the conditions are tough this afternoon so we might get a little bit closer," said head coach Debbie Dillman. "We lost too many shots late in the round. We need to get it going from the start and keep it going all day. Golf is a funny game and Ii believe anything is possible."

Florida State carded a team score of 297 - its third best team score of the year and 10 strokes better than its team score in the first round.

No. 6 ranked Alabama is the team leader after the first two rounds. The Crimson Tide holds an eight stroke lead over Denver. Camilla Lennarth of Alabama is the individual leader with a two day total of 139. She is the only golfer who had carded two consecutive rounds of sub-par golf in the event.

Three-time Seminole All-American Caroline Westrup carded a four-over par score of 74 and is in a tie for 24th place with a seven-over par score of 147 through the first 36 holes of the 54 hole event.

With one round remaining to be played, Westrup needs to either advance with the Seminoles as one of the top eight teams in the standings or finish as one of the top two individuals not on one of those top eight teams in order to play in the championship round for the fourth time in her four year career.

Silva (Santiago, Chile) shot a three-over par 73 and has a two-day total of 151. She bettered her first round score by four strokes in the second round. Silva was well on her way to one of the top individual rounds of the day and was one-over par for the round as she approached her final hole of the afternoon. With three birdies and 10 holes at par Silva was as much as one under par for the afternoon and had not been more than one stroke over par during her first 17 holes. She unfortunately carded a double-bogey on the 18th and final hole to finish with a three-over par 73.

Silva's 36-hole total of 147 (on the par 70 course) is her third best two-round score of the year. She totaled a 143 through the first two rounds of the UCF Invitational in March and scored a 36-hole total of 150 at the Cougar Classic in September.

Thomson (Perth, Australia) carded a 73 - the best round of her Seminole career - as she lowered her score by four strokes as compared to her first round score of 77. She was the Seminoles' most consistent golfer in the second round with 14 holes at or below par. Thomson was even par over her last 10 holes of the round with one birdie, one bogey and eight holes of par including a string of six holes at par or better during the round.

In addition to establishing her career low score for a single round, Thomson's total of 151 through the first 36 holes is also a personal best score.

Westrup (Ahus, Sweden) has a two-day total of 147. She carded a 73 in the first round and a 74 in the second round. Following a tough start on her first six holes of the afternoon, she was a total of one-over par with one birdie and nine holes of par over her final 12 holes of the afternoon. Westrup was very consistent over her back nine with two bogeys and seen consecutive holes of par.

"I must putt better in the final round," said Westrup. "I had 37 putts yesterday and 35 today. I'm confident that I will come out and play my best round of the tournament on Saturday!"

Junior Lacey Agnew (Jonesboro, Ga.) carded her best round of the event with a seven-over par score of 77. She has a two-day total of 156 and is in 88th place in the individual standings. She carded 11 of her 18 holes at par in the second round as compared to eight rounds at par or better in her first round. Agnew improved her score by two strokes in the second round as compared to her first round score of 79.

Agnew's score of 77 in the second round is tied for her fourth best score of the season while her 36 hole score of 156 is tie for her second best of her junior year.

Competition in the event finishes up Saturday with a final round of 18 holes scheduled to be played.
