GREENSBORO, N.C. (seminoles.com) - Florida State freshman Matilda Castren is in first place in the individual standings, and the 25th ranked Seminoles are in a tie for fifth place in the team standings after the first round of the 26th Annual ACC Women's Golf Championships at Sedgefield Country Club. Castren carded a 2 under par 69 and has a two stroke lead in the individual standings with 36 holes remaining to be played as she bids to become the first Seminole to win an individual ACC title in the sport of golf.

Castren led the 55-player field with five birdies and 16 holes scored at par or better in shooting her fourth consecutive sub-par round. She was never above par and was as many as three strokes under par in carding her ninth career round of 70 or lower and her fourth consecutive round scored at 69 or lower. Castren is the ACC's leader with a 71.50 stroke average including an average of 68.25 in her last four rounds played.

Third ranked Duke, with three players in the top seven of the individual standings, and 22nd ranked Virginia, with three players in the top six of the individual standings, are tied for the team lead after 18 holes. The Cavaliers and Blue Devils have a seven stroke lead over Miami. The Seminoles are in a three-way tie for fifth place with Notre Dame and Maryland. Castren has a two stroke lead over Lauren Coughlin and Brian Mao of Virginia and Celine Boutier of Duke.

"We didn't have our best day today but we still have two rounds of opportunities ahead of us," said head coach Amy Bond. "This is a championship caliber golf course and though we didn't have our "A" game today we got into the clubhouse and are looking forward to tomorrow. Tomorrow is moving day and we are looking forward to teeing off and moving up."

Castren (Espoo, Finland), who is one of the top contenders for ACC Golfer of the Year honors, was at her usual consistent self throughout the first round. She earned birdies on her second and third holes and moved to 3 under par with a birdie on her eighth hole. She ran into trouble with a bogey and a double bogey on the 12th and 13th holes but closed the round with consecutive birdies on the 17th and 18th holes to finish under par for the 10th time in 24 rounds this year.

"My putter worked very well for me today," Castren," "I hit some good approach shots by mostly my score came with the putter. I also feel that I was very patient today."

Castren has carded 19 birdies over the course of her last 72 holes (.263 percent) and has been at or below par for 66 consecutive holes. The last time she was above par was after her sixth hole in the first round of the Web.com Intercollegiate on April 7.

"Matilda started off really well and played the first four holes as well as anybody in the field today," said Bond. The first four holes are the toughest on the course so I know she was excited about that. She let a few shots get away from her on the back nine but finished the day well with a short birdie putt on 18. Matilda played a very good round of golf today."

Junior Laure Castelain (Bordeaux, France) is in a tie for 14th place in the individual standings as she carded a 4 over par score of 75. She played her best golf on her back nine as she finished the round at even par on her last nine holes. Castelain was 1 under par over her last seven holes with two birdies and four holes scored at par.

Castelain, who is playing in her third career ACC Championship, is looking to earn the best ACC finish of her career. She finished in a tie for 19th place in 2013 and in a tie for 29th place in 2012. Castelain's score of 75 in Thursday's first round is her third best single round score of her career in ACC Championships play. She has now carded four consecutive single rounds score of 75 or better.

Florida State will look to improve its team standing in the second round on Friday. The Seminoles will tee off beginning at 8:50 a.m. and are paired with NC State and Clemson.

Florida State will play host to the NCAA East Regional Championship as part of the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship May 8-9-10, 2014 at Southwood Golf Club in Tallahassee. The 24 teams and eight individuals who will compete in the Tallahassee regional will be announced on April 28. Be sure to return to seminoles.com to see the unveiling of the regional field.
