ATHENS, Ga. -
Florida State University freshman Caroline Westrup won the individual title and the Seminole women's golf team finished fourth in the team standings at the prestigious Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the University of Georgia Golf Course. Westrup carded a one-under par 71 in the final round and defeated Jenny Suh of Alabama by one stroke to win the individual championship.
Westrup's victory marked the first individual title by a Seminole golfer since current PGA touring member Kristin Tamulis won the championship at the 2004 Ryder/Florida Championship.
Competing in only the third tournament of her Seminole career, Westrup (Ahus, Sweden) was one of only five golfers to play under par golf in the final round of the event. Her 71 allowed her to beat Suh, who carded a two-under par 70 in the final round, by one stroke. Westrup began play in the final round in sixth place. She was even-par (144) over the final 36 holes of the event.
Senior Caroline Larsson (Danderyd, Sweden) and junior Jaclyn Burch (Wildwood, Mo.) both finished in a tie for 21st place it in the individual standings. Larsson carded a tournament best 75 in the second round while Burch finished strong with a 73 in the third and final round.
The team finish for the Seminoles marked their second consecutive top-five placing after a third place finish at the Lady Gamecock Invitational earlier this month. The Seminoles are back in action at the state championship meet beginning Saturday at Don Shula's Golf Club and Resort in Miami Lakes.
Georgia held off a strong final round by Auburn to post a two-stroke team victory in the team competition. It marked the third consecutive year the Lady Bulldogs have won their home tournament. The Lady Bulldogs posted a final-round team score 300, seven shots higher than Auburn's tally of 293, the lowest single-round score of the tournament. Georgia's three-day total of 903, however, was two shots better than the Tigers, seven better than third-place Wake Forest. The Seminoles (918) and Kent State rounded out the top five team finishers among the 18-team field.
