March 23, 2008
ATHENS, Ga. -
Florida State University junior All-America Caroline Westrup shot a 73 in the final round and the Seminole women's golf team finished in 12th place in the team standings as play in the three-round Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic came to a close Sunday. Westrup rebounded from two sub-par rounds to finish in a tie for 22nd place in the individual standings as she led the Seminoles to their best team round of the event as they finished with their best standing of the tournament.
Georgia captured the team title as it defeated Purdue in a playoff. Tied with a three-day total of 900 upon completion of regular play with the Boilermakers, Georgia recorded four pars on the second playoff hole to win its 13th title in its home-course tournament. Despite leading by three strokes at the start of play in the final round, Georgia shot a 10-over 298 while second-place Purdue fired a 7-over 295. Those scores placed the teams in a two-way tie for first at the conclusion of play with identical marks of 36-over par 900s. Purdue teammates Christel Boeljon and Maria Hernandez shot identical scores of two-over par 218 to finish tied for the individual lead.
Westrup (Ahus, Sweden) shot a one-over par 73 after two uncharacteristic scores of 80 and 78 in the first two rounds of the event. She was never more than two strokes over par during her round and finished her play with a birdie on her last hole to bring her score down to one-over par. Westrup has been the Seminoles top finisher in all seven of Florida State's events this year.
Freshman Macarena Silva (Santiago, Chile) earned the best finish of her career as she carded a two-over par 74 and finished in a tie for 24th place in the individual standings. She finished with scores of 77 and 74 as she completed play in the event at seven over par in the final two rounds after finishing the first round with a nine over par score of 81. Silva's finish marks the first top-25 individual finish of her career.
Senior Whitney Wright (Rockingham, N.C.) played the best golf of the tournament as she carded a 77 in the final round. She was five-over par in the final round after finishing an average of nine over par in the first two rounds of the event.
The Seminoles will play in their fourth tournament in as many weeks as they tee off in the Bryan National Collegiate at Brown's Summit Golf Course in Greensboro, N.C. March 28-30.
