GAINESVILLE, Fla. (seminoles.com) - The Florida State University women's golf team is in a tie for first place in the team standings and Seminole freshman Matilda Castren is in a tie for seventh place in the individual standings after the first round of the 42nd Annual Lady Gator Invitational at the Mark Bostick Golf Course. Florida State, which has finished in the top three of the team standings in their first two spring events, is in front of eight teams ranked ahead of it in the national rankings including No. 4 Oklahoma (tied for sixth), No. 12 Arizona (tied for fourth) and No. 16 Florida (11th place).
"The girls played great today and battled hard," said Head Coach Amy Bond. "We've put ourselves in a very good position and are looking forward to the weekend."
Florida State is tied for the team lead with Ohio State -- who like the Seminoles has four players in the top top 25 of the individual standings. The Seminoles and Buckeyes are tied with identical scores of 292. Penn State is in third place (only one stroke behind) while Arizona and Virginia and tie for fourth in the team standings. Karolina Vickova of Florida is in first place in the individual standings with a 1 under par score of 69.
Castren, who was named the ACC Golfer of the Month of February, is in a tie for seventh in the individual standings with a 2-over par score of 72. She led the Seminoles with four birdies and was never more than two strokes over par. Castren played her best golf with an even par score on the back nine with three birdies, seven holes scored at par or better and only two holes scored over par.
Castren (Espoo, Finland), as evidenced by the scores in her first six tournaments, is a total of two strokes over par in 15 total rounds.
Sophomore Alex Milan (Lutz, Fla.) and freshman Anna Sophia Böhmer (Cali, Colombia) are tied for 16th in the individual standings with identical scores of 73 (3 over par). Milan and Bohmer carded identical rounds two birdies and 13 holes scored at par or better each. Milan was never more than three strokes over par while Bohmer birdied the 17th hole to bring her score back to 3 over par.
Junior Laure Castelain (Bordeaux, France) is in a tie for 25th place in the individual standings with a 4 over par scores of 74. She carded three birdies and was as many as 1 stroke under par during the round.
Florida State will play its second of three rounds beginning at 9:00 a.m. and will play from tee No.1. The Seminoles will play with Ohio State and Penn State.
