March 10, 2007
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -
Florida State University women's golf team is in ninth place in the team standings after the first two rounds of the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational at the University of Florida Golf Course. The Seminoles are led by junior Whitney Brummett, who is in a tie for 15th place in the individual standings, and sophomore Caroline Westrup, who is in a tie for 21st in the individual standings.
Florida, the host school, fired a season-low 36-hole score of 585 (293-292, +25) to lead a 16-team field after day one of the event. The defending 2006 SunTrust Champions hold a three-stroke lead over second-place TCU (297-291=588), while Florida's defending medalist Sandra Gal is also poised to repeat with a one-under 139 (69-70), which also stands atop the leader board.
Florida State is well within reach of moving up in the team standings when play resumes Sunday. The Seminoles are only nine strokes behind seventh place South Florida and only 14 strokes behind fifth place North Carolina.
Brummett (Eureka, Mo.) led the Seminoles over the course of the first two rounds with identical scores of 74 in the first and second rounds. Brummett finished in 16th place at last weekend's Chrysler Challenge and is looking to earn her second consecutive top-20 finish.
Seminole sophomore Caroline Westrup, the nation's No. 1 ranked women's collegiate golfer, is in a tie for 21st place in the individual standings. She was in a tied for sixth place after a first round scored of 72 but slipped back to a seven-over par 77 in the second round. Westrup earned medalist honors at last week's Chrysler Challenge.
The final round of the event begins with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Sunday morning.
