PONTE BUGGIANESE, Italy -- The Florida State women's hoops team created what will undoubtedly be one of the lasting memories of its 10-day foreign tour trip on Tuesday night, cruising past a team of Italian All-Stars, 81-51, at Pala Pertini. The Seminoles were led by freshman guard Brittany Brown's 25 points on 10-of-18 shooting, while fellow newcomer Ivey Slaughter stuffed the stat sheet by pouring in 16 points, grabbing 13 rebounds and tallying five steals. Redshirt sophomore Morgan Jones added 14 points and 11 boards, while senior Cheetah Delgado dished six assists, freshman Kai James scored 13 points and redshirt junior Lauren Coleman had an efficient eight points and nine rebounds.
The contest followed FIBA International rules and was played in four 10-minute quarters. The Noles put their foot on the gas pedal early, jumping out to a 9-4 lead on a putback by Jones.
Near the end of the first quarter, Slaughter made the kind of hustle play that will endear her to coaches, teammates and fans. She stripped the ball from an Italian player and dribbled up the court before passing to Delgado, who completed the give-and-go with the freshman for an easy layup that made the score 22-13.
Brown owned the second quarter with numerous slashes to the rim for layups and a nothing-but-net three-pointer from the top of the key that put FSU in front 41-24. The Seminoles led 46-29 at halftime and never looked back in the second half.
FSU went up 20 points early in the fourth quarter, 68-48, when Brown fed James for a layup.
Senior forward Natasha Howard did not play in the game, as she flew home to be with her family following the Africa leg of the trip after her brother was critically injured last weekend. She is in the team's thoughts and prayers.
Brown and Slaughter shared their thoughts on the big FSU victory during a four-hour drive to Lake Como following the game late Tuesday night.
Ivey Slaughter, Freshman Forward What worked well in our win tonight was we communicated well and we played better defense. I think that we played more together than we had earlier in our games in Africa.
I was happy with the way I played - especially in the beginning. Typically, I try to play as hard as I can and I hustle. I try to get all of the loose balls. Overall, it was a great team effort.
The Italian team did a lot of cuts and a lot of screening. They played team basketball and would pass the ball a lot.
Brittany (Brown) was awesome tonight (scoring 25 points), and she can play like that every game. Kai (James) played great, too, and she is fun to play with. In high school, I was the only post and now knowing that I have a post with me that can score is great.
Cheetah, Morgan and Lauren have stepped up as leaders. They've really helped us freshmen out - letting us know to keep our heads up when we make a mistake. It has been great getting the experience of playing games in college.
I enjoyed the shopping in Florence. I bought a lot of souvenirs there for family. Africa was incredible, too. The best part for me was how appreciative the kids in Africa were whom we gave basketballs and bracelets to.
Brittany Brown, Freshman Guard My teammates were setting great screens, and I was able to get some open looks and knock them down. We played great defense, and got a lot of deflections. Cheetah was really pushing the ball up and we were getting good looks in transition.
Ivey really hustles. She has since we first started practicing. She got a ton of rebounds today. She really sacrifices her body. All three of us freshmen that played, including Kai (James), too - we are really clicking. We are all about doing whatever we need to do to win.
The Italian team really moved the ball and that made us work harder. We had to work hard too, because Natasha (Howard) wasn't with us, too.
I really liked the history and the sites we saw in Florence and Pisa. The David statue was cool, and the paintings -- and the Leaning Tower of Pisa of course. It was a lot of steps, but it wasn't too bad walking up it.
This whole trip has been humbling. It makes you thankful for everything you have. I'm so thankful to get this opportunity to get to play basketball and come over here to Africa and Italy.
I'm excited to see what we do in our next game on Thursday after getting this big win tonight.
