You Oughta Know: Kai James

Aug. 1, 2013

A product of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Kai James is excited to start her collegiate career. Florida State fans should be pumped up to see the 6-5 freshman center hit the court in the garnet and gold, as well. Kai was a consensus Top-25 recruit, played on Team USA's U17 national team and was a McDonald's All-American. She'll team with All-ACC First Team award-winner Natasha Howard to form one of the conference's top post tandems. Expect Kai to put up numbers a lot higher than the "0" she'll be wearing on her jersey.

Watch Kai talk about a variety of things, including why she chose to attend FSU, in this season's first installment of "You Oughta Know."

What is your favorite moment playing basketball so far in your career?
"Being recruited by Coach Sue (Semrau) was probably the best moment of playing basketball."

Why did you choose to come to Florida State?
"What made me decide to come to Florida State was that it felt very welcoming. When I came here on my visit, it seemed like everyone wanted me here, it wasn't just the coaches. I felt very at home and very at peace with myself."

What are your strengths as a student-athlete?
"I would say my strengths as a basketball player are pretty much off the court because I try to be a good teammate to everybody. I try to be encouraging. On the court I would say I'm a good rebounder."

What will it be like playing with All-ACC forward and rising senior Natasha Howard in the post this season?
"Playing with Natasha Howard is going to be really fun because she's such an athletic player. She's great, very fast, very quick, very versatile, and she has an amazing post game."

Can you talk about bonding with the team so far this summer?
"We blend very well together. It feels to me like I've been here for a couple of years already with the girls."

What is Coach Sue like?
"What I like about Coach Sue the most is that she pretty much preaches the same teachings that my mom did. She always encourages everyone to be a good person, to be just like she is. She's an amazing person. She preaches that to her players as well as her coaching staff."

What do you hope to have accomplished after your four years here at FSU?
"After my four years here, I hope to be remembered as just a great person, because I plan to use basketball as a tool to help me grow as a person."
