Cheetah Delgado is part of the final 22 for the Lieberman Award.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Florida State women’s basketball senior point guard Cheetah Delgado has been named one of the final 22 candidates for the Nancy Lieberman Award, announced today by the award’s selection committee.

Named after Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman, the award recognizes the top point guard in women’s NCAA Division I college basketball. A premier Selection Committee made up of top college basketball personnel including Hall of Famers, media members, head coaches and sports information directors was appointed by the Hall of Fame to review the candidates.

The list will be narrowed down to a final five by March and the winner will be announced during Final Four weekend activities.

“We are honored to be recognizing these 22 athletes for their strengths, skills and commitment to the game of basketball and are excited to move forward in the selection process,” Lieberman said. “All of these young women deserve to be on the list for this well-respected award and deserve recognition for their determination.”

Delgado is on the verge of a record-breaking season in terms of assists at Florida State. Through 27 games played this year, the Kissimmee, Fla., native has totaled 184 assists and is just 15 away from breaking the single-season school record of 198 held by Courtney Ward in 2009-10.

The 5-foot-2 guard leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in both overall assists per game (6.8) as well as assists per game in conference play (7.7). Delgado is on pace to record the most amount of assists per game by an ACC player since former Lieberman Award recipient Kristi Toliver of Maryland registered 7.4 per game in 2007-08.

Delgado’s 6.8 assists per game would tie for the sixth-highest average by an ACC player if the season ended today. It would be tied for the second-most by a senior student-athlete in ACC history, only behind Tara Heiss’ (Maryland) eight assist average in 1978.

On Feb. 9, Delgado broke a 38-year old school record when she registered 15 assists against Boston College, breaking former player Shirley Silsby’s 14 assists against Flagler on Feb. 6, 1976.

Delgado also leads the ACC with 37.3 minutes played per game, an average of two minutes more than second-place Brianna Kiesel of Pitt. Out of the 1,090 total minutes FSU has played this year, Delgado has played 1,006 of those minutes. In ACC play, she is averaging 38.1 minutes per game.

The senior point guard has totaled two double-doubles this season against UNC Greensboro and Miami. She also has five games with double-digit assists against UNC Greensboro (10), Miami (10), Boston College (15), Syracuse (12) and Maryland (10). Against Boston College, Delgado fell one rebound shy of a very unconventional double-double with assists and rebounds.

Delgado has also been an active presence at the top of FSU’s 2-3 zone, generating two steals per game to rank sixth in the ACC.

Delgado and Florida State wrap up their regular season with two important games at home this week. FSU hosts Georgia Tech on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. on ESPN3, then follows with Senior Day on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. on ESPNU when it faces Virginia.
