TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) - Led by junior guard Alexa Deluzio, the Florida State women's basketball team will look to extend its winning streak over Clemson to seven games when the Tigers come to the Donald L. Tucker Center for a 7 p.m. matchup on Thursday.
Deluzio has scored in double figures in five consecutive games and is averaging nearly 17.8 ppg and shooting 54.5 percent from the floor during that span. The 5-11 Orlando, Fla., native has run the point for much of the season for the Noles and also been a standout defender.
"She's such a talented player," Florida State head coach Sue Semrau said. "She has really stepped up for us by being in an attack mentality on both ends of the floor all the time."
Despite Deluzio's career-best-matching 23 points and four three-pointers versus No. 5 Maryland on Monday night, the Terps were able to snag a 91-70 win over the Seminoles in the ACC Opener.
Still, Florida State has won five of seven games and holds an 8-7 record, while playing the nation's second hardest schedule according to RealTimeRPI.com.
"We've got to do a much better job than we did on Monday night," Semrau said. "Especially on the boards and taking care of the basketball. I didn't like our effort. We'll come out hungrier for Thursday night's game."
FSU will look to rebound against a Clemson team that lost 55-33 at home to Virginia Tech in its conference opener and is just 4-8 this season. The Tigers are shooting just 38.0 percent this season and have lost three straight. Clemson has been led by freshman Nikki Dixon (12.8 ppg) and senior Shaniqua Pauldo (10.4 ppg).
The Seminoles have won 17 of 18 versus the Tigers, dating back to the 2002-03 season. Last season, FSU defeated Clemson, 83-73, in Clemson, S.C. and 67-50 in Tallahassee in the final conference matchup of the season.
Deluzio hung 22 points on the Tigers in that last matchup on Feb. 27, 2011. She averaged 19.5 ppg against Clemson in 2010-11, while senior preseason All-American Cierra Bravard put up averages of 13.5 points and 9.5 boards against the Tigers a year ago. Following the battle with the Tigers, FSU hits the road to face Virginia Tech on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET in Blacksburg, Va.
Thursday night's game is "Student Welcome Back Night" and FSU students can register to win an iPod Touch at the Spirit Rewards table outside of Section V. It's also the last chance for students to get two points on their Spirit Rewards card.
