Wyckoff's Free Throws Give Florida State ACC Victory

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Freshman Brooke Wyckoff sank two free throws with :02 remaining in the game to give Florida State (5-9. 1-4) a 64-63 victory over Wake Forest (4-11, 0-5) this evening at Tully Gymnasium. The win snapped a Florida State seven-game losing streak and was the Tribe's first ACC win in nearly two years.

Florida State built an 11-6 lead early, but a 23-8 Wake Forest run allowed the Demon Deacons to build a 10-point lead with 4:14 to go in the first half. The Seminoles cut the WFU lead to four at the break, 31-27.

Wake Forest increased its lead to eight points in the opening minutes of the second half before the Seminoles went to work. Trailing 37-29 at the 18:06 mark, Florida State ran off 13 straight points to take a 42-37 lead with just over 14 minutes to play. The game saw three ties in the remainder of the game, but Florida State maintained the advantage until the final seconds of the game and even led by eight points with five minutes to play. With 11 seconds remaining, Wake Forest's Cynthia Kelley missed the front end of a one-and-one, but Olivia Dardy rebounded the ball and put it back up for the score, giving Wake Forest a 63-62 lead. Wyckoff was fouled on a shot attempt from the baseline and hit the free throws for the FSU victory.

"I'm very proud of this group of ladies," FSU head coach Sue Semrau said. "We outrebounded Wake Forest by nine, kept our turnovers under 20 and had a solid defensive effort the entire game. There were a lot of positives things tonight."

Sophomore forward Latavia Coleman led all players with 22 points and eight rebounds. Jen Robinson added nine points, including two three pointers, and six assists while Wyckoff and Lysa Moorefield contributed eight points apiece. Wyckoff also had four blocks. For Wake Forest, Heidi Coleman and Cynthia Kelley led the way with 17 and 14 points, respectively.

Florida State's next game will be at Duke on Jan. 16th.
