Sept. 22, 2010

New Student- Athlete Orientation was held August 23rd at the Moore Athletic Center, to provide incoming students-athletes valuable information about student-athlete life and programs available to them at FSU.

The program introduced them to current student-athletes and other new student-athletes, who like them, chose to join the Seminole Nation. Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) members, served as peer educators giving new students personal accounts of what the next four years will entail.

Orientation began with breakfast in the Varsity Club, followed by a signature scavenger hunt that encouraged the new student-athletes to interact and meet one another. In the auditorium introductions of the Athletic Administrators and SAAC members were highlighted by Dr. Beckham, the Faculty Athletic Representative, who led the new Seminoles in a War chant.

"Dr. Beckham's chant was very inspiring. He brought the power of a historic tribe and hoped to instill their resolution into the new class of Seminoles." SAAC member Michelle Jenije observed.

After the inspiring war chant, the new student-athletes were then split into five groups and rotated through essential need-to-know areas of Student Life, Academics, Sports Medicine/Nutrition, Technology/Computer Lab, and Compliance. A game of "gotcha" was used as an icebreaker for new students to get to know the members in their group letting students have a little fun before the start of the first topic discussion.

Each session provided handouts, student- athlete testimonies, and skits to help ease the new student-athletes transition into college life. Academics' skit equipped with a toaster, pillows, and blankets, exemplified what not to do in the classroom and was an instant classic with the new students.

After the completion of each area, students reconvened in the FSU Athletic Museum for Q & A, pizza, and more networking. New student-athletes left Orientation feeling a part of the Seminole Nation with high expectations for the upcoming year.
