Winter Bridge

Feb. 2, 2012

The Florida State Athletic Department has adopted a program off of the original Summer Bridge program and added a little chill. With the arrival of the New Year and spring semester, Florida State welcomed 15 new student-athletes through the Winter Bridge program, which is led by, Jennifer Santiago and Winter Bridge Staff. The Winter Bridge program is very similar to the Summer Bridge program. The difference, other than the obvious change from the summer and winter seasons, is that instead of this program being jammed packed into a week; it is one day a week over five weeks. The dates for the 2012 Spring Semester are January 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th, and February 3rd.

Among the Winter Bridge new student-athletes are early enrollees for the football team, track and field team, tennis, volleyball, and FSU's newest and 20th sport, sand volleyball as well as transfers. In the first session of Winter Bridge, the new FSU student-athletes get a crash course of the academic side of Florida State with Blackboard training, academic advising, and a meeting with compliance. The next sessions involve the student-athletes focusing on time management and the importance of being a Seminole and who they represent. There are also sessions on academic integrity and expectations of student-athletes from the perspective of FSU professors. Finally, a favorite of all FSU student-athletes is the community service event. This year, the Winter Bridge student-athletes will participate in the United Way Days of Doing: "Whale of a Sale" event.

Florida State wants every student-athlete, especially those just joining the Seminole family, to know that these are the vital and memorable years of any person's life. One of the Florida State Athletic Department goals is to do everything possible to get every new class of student-athletes off to a great first step. Winter Bridge 2012 has been great thus far. We have an awesome staff, student-athlete mentors, and student-athlete involvement. We hope to finish strong and look forward to seeing these student-athletes grow, not only as students or athletes, but also as mature men and women.
