The first ever Seminole Junior Team Tennis League concluded Sunday with great success. The program was met with rave reviews and promises to be an annual event in years to come. The action took place on three Sundays this fall under the tutelage of FSU's men's and women's tennis teams. It not only gave area youth the opportunity to learn from experienced players, but it also provided the FSU tennis teams with the chance to give back to the community.
The junior participants, ranging in age from 8-14, were divided into four teams consisting of six players each. The squads were coached by members of the men's and women's tennis teams.
The Garnet team went undefeated (3-0) to sweep the event. The squad was coached by Kia Asberg and Elliot Elias. David Berry, Holly Johnson, Owen Long, Joel Handler, Nathan Mayewski, Michael Tolbert, and substitutes Ridgely Plains, Tyler Turkel, and Lane Turkel made up the victorious unit. Garnet team member Joel Handler, along with Gold team standout Nick Meros, were unbeaten in singles action.
The Gold team, coached by Nanette Duxin and Rodrigo Laub, was made up of Nick Meros, Jusara Madrid, Armand Cognetta, Daniel Bailey, Alex Cordero, and Lucy Barrios. The Spear Team was instructed by Jessica Balbuena and John Roddick. Edward Estes, Owen Turkel, Jordan Vogter, Peter Sawyer, Jake Stalder, and Alex Lai were members of the Spear squad. The Seminole team was coached by Ali Weber and Deni Franulovic. Drew Bailey, Matt Kiser, Quinn English, Theo Meros, Patrick Chu, and Alex Cordero made up the team.
