TAMPA, Fla. - With a 6-2 singles record, the Florida State men's tennis team started the State of Florida Championships with a strong showing. Not only exceling in singles, the doubles play for the `Noles started strong as well with a 3-1 record. The Seminoles are competing on the campus of USF which has Florida State joining the Bulls as well as UCF, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, Miami and North Florida in the tournament.
Making his collegiate debut was Cristian Gonzalez Mendez (Santiago de Compostela, Spain) who teamed up with junior Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) in doubles this morning. The duo nabbed their first win of the year with an 8-2 win over Norbert Nemcsek and Leonardo Nahar of UNF. Gonzalez Mendez defeated Lucas Marin-Salcedo (USF) 6-4, 6-4 in the first round of singles in Draw A.
"Today's doubles match was a great opportunity for us because we were able to do all the things we've done in practice," said Bucaro. "Cristian played a great match and helped me feel good out there. I'm glad to have played with him and contributed to his first win."
Bucaro was also successful in singles posting a 6-0, 5-7, 10-5 win over Florida Atlantic's Garrett Betsarakis in the B Draw. Also in the B Draw was redshirt-sophomore Brian Alden (Barrington, Ill.) who made his debut at Florida State after transferring from Illinois. Alden won his singles match 6-2, 7-6 (7) over Collin Brown of Florida Gulf Coast.
In the A Singles Draw, Florida State posted a strong showing with four players advancing to the second round tomorrow which ties for the most along with USF. Junior Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) defeated UCF's Joe Delinks 6-2, 6-1 while fellow junior Jordan Kelly-Houston won 6-3, 6-2 over Pedro Ast of Miami. Also defeating a member of the Hurricane's team was sophomore Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) who won 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 over Omar Aly.
Reed and freshman Dominic Cotrone (Bradenton, Fla.) teamed up to win 8-2 against Betsarakis and Robbie Dubuque of FAU. Davis paired up with Kelly-Houston in doubles where the duo won 8-2 over FGCU's Mat Rock and Tianyu Bao.
