FSU Men's Tennis Signs Top-Ranked Junior From Poland

May 10, 2000

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The Florida State men's tennis team has announced the signing of Bartos Koldej from Warsaw, Poland. The newest member of the Seminoles is one of the top juniors in Poland.

"I think Bartos brings a real power game that our team needs," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "He has a 125 mph plus serve and he hits the ball bigger than anyone we have currently on our team."

Koldej, who choose FSU over LSU and Kentucky, is currently playing at Georgia Perimeter Junior College where the team is attempting to defend their national title. Koldej is also looking to repeat as a National Champion in doubles. Currently, Koldej and his partner are the No. 1 ranked junior college team in the country.

"Bartos has an unusual combination of power and athletic ability that will be fun to work with," said Hultquist. "He is outstanding in both singles and doubles."

Koldej, who is also ranked fifth in the nation in singles, joins a Seminole tennis program that was involved in nine "4-3" matches in the 2000 spring dual match season. The Seminoles finished the season with a 14-10 record but won just 27 of 65 doubles matches and 68 of 132 singles matches. The addition of Koldej will provide a team who is losing just one senior, with a player who is experienced and talented in both singles and doubles.

Florida State is expected to return seven of eight players from the 1999-2000 season including No. 1 singles player sophomore Xavier Luscan. Luscan, who transferred from UCLA, posted a 17-9 record in his first season at FSU and played No. 1 doubles for the Seminoles as well. Luscan's doubles partner, Rodrigo Laub, also had an excellent first-year campaign winning 20 of 29 singles matches. FSU will have to adjust to the loss of senior team leader Mike Ingham, one of the winningest Seminoles in school history. Ingham played No. 2 singles for FSU and won 11 of 20 matches at that position.
