TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 20 Florida State men's tennis team (10-3) will travel to Gainesville to play rival No. 7 Florida (12-2) on Wednesday, March 17 at 4:00 p.m. This is the 71st time the teams have faced one another. The original meeting between the two teams was postponed due to rain on February 24.
"Florida has a lot of great players, ones that are very strong," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "It's always a great battle. We usually have very close matches and a lot of emotion in them."
Wednesday's match marks the second time this season that Florida State will take on a Top 10 opponent. Florida State's most recent win over a Top 10 team was in 2007 when the Seminoles took down the No. 8 ranked Gators in Tallahassee. FSU has posted 20 all-time victories against Florida.
Leading Florida State are seniors No. 22 Jean-Yves Aubone (Miami, Fla.) and No. 48 Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.). The two have combined to post a 26-4 record in singles this spring with all four losses versus Top 20 opponents. Aubone, the 2009 ACC Player of the Year, is currently tenth all-time in overall career wins with 149.
Freshmen Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) is the first freshman on the team to reach 10 single wins this season, boasting a 10-5 record while going 8-3 on court four.
No. 70 Mirzadeh and Smith are currently 8-4 on court one in doubles with three of their losses coming to teams ranked in the top 30. At No. 60 is Aubone and junior Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) who boast a 7-3 record on court two. The freshmen duo of Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) are 9-4 this season on court three.
The Seminoles have competed against Florida more times than any other program in FSU tennis history which dates back to 1956. Last season Aubone defeated current Gator Carlos Cuento on court one.
The dual-match will take place at 4:00 p.m. at the Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville, Fla.
