Tallahassee, Fla. - After overpowering Florida A&M earlier Friday with a 7-0 victory, the Seminoles continued their winning streak defeating North Florida 6-1 and improving the season record to 2-0.
Doubles play started strong on center court as senior Ytai Abougzir (Boca Raton, Fla.) and freshman Jean-Yves Aubone (Miami, Fla.) jumped to a quick victory over the Osprey's Matias Sigal and Glen Marshall with a dominating 8-0 mark The doubles point was clenched by sophomore duo Andrew Bailey (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Maciek Sykut (Marathon, Fla.) in a suspenseful match as they defeated North Florida's Elad Gabay and Eduardo Pereira 8-6 while the final doubles match finished in the number two spot as senior Jonathas Sucupira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and freshman Bradley Mixson (Miami, Fla.) fought back to a tie the score of 7-7 but eventually fell to UNF's Javier Ferrin and Leonardo Gomes 9-7.
Starting strong in singles competition, freshman Mixson dominated in the number six position as he won a second bagel victory of the day. "Two in one day!" Mixson screamed, as he defeated North Florida's Glen Marshall 6-0, 6-0.
"It's pretty exciting because it's not easy to win a set 6-0," freshman Bradley Mixson said. "I faced a lot of game points and it definitely took a lot of concentration."
"That's pretty good winning 24 games in a row and he played really good last week too," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "You can tell he's really coming along from the fall season."
Next to finish came from senior Sucupira in position four defeating UNF's Ben Smith 6-2, 6-4 while Jean-Yves Aubone clinched Florida State's victory over North Florida by defeating Javier Ferrin 6-3, 6-1. Senior Ytai Abougzir debuted the 2007 season in the number one position as he fell to Osprey's Matias Sigal 6-2, 6-4 while in the next court No. 76 Sykut overcame UNF's Eduardo Periera 6-3, 5-7, 10-4 in a third set tie-break. Cloer closed the match in the number five position also in a third set tie-break defeating North Florida's Elad Gabay 6-7 (), 6-3, 10-6.
Florida State men's tennis return to the Scott Speicher Tennis Center Saturday, January 27 against Florida Atlantic at 10:00 a.m. and Georgia State at 2:00 p.m. On Sunday, January 28, the Seminoles take on Furman at 10:00 a.m. As always, admission is free.
