Florida State Tennis Will Welcome Hall Of Famer To Banquet

Tallahassee, Fla.- Florida State tennis will welcome one of America's greatest tennis players to its annual banquet on Friday, January 25. Tony Trabert was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1970 after an illustrious career which included five Grand Slam singles titles.
"Tony Trabert is the Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi of his day," said FSU men's tennis coach Dwayne Hultquist. "He won five grand slam titles, he was a Davis Cup coach and he won the title as a player. To have [Tony] Trabert come in here will be really exciting for our players and all of the fans that we have here in Tallahassee."
Trabert had arguably one of the greatest amateur careers of all-time. In 1955 he won three of the four Grand Slams, Wimbledon, the French Championships and the U.S. Championships to finish as the No. 1 amateur of the year. That same year, Trabert won 35 titles while compiling a 104-5 record that included 10 consecutive tournament winss. In doubles action, he won 12 doubles titles with partner Vic Seixas. Trabert appeared in the U.S. and World top 10 rankings four times, including a No. 1 finish in 1953 and 1955.
Trabert had his greatest success at the French Championships where he won five titles including back to back victories in 1954 and 1955. His 1955 title began an American drought lasting 34 years before another American would win the French Open.
Trabert was also a mainstay in Davis Cup competition leading the United States to victory in 1953 as a player and in 1978-79 as a captain. In college, he played tennis for the University of Cincinnati, where he won the U.S. Intercollegiate singles title in 1951.
