ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Going into the final event of the fall season, Florida State University men's tennis player Mat Cloer wanted to be at the top of his game. Unfortunately, for the Seminole junior his trip to the ITA Indoor National Championships has been hampered by injury.

Going up against the number 59 player in the country, San Diego's Pierrick Ysern, Cloer (Brevard, N.C.) dropped his opening round match 6-3, 6-1. Down 4-3 in the first set, Cloer was broken by Ysem who then won on his serve-despite Cloer pulling even at deuce-to close out the first set. Knee problems hindered Cloer's movement in the second set and Ysem took advantage of that in a 6-1 triumph to win the match.

"The knee was a bit of a factor, but the guy Mat played today served very well," FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "Mat's strength is his return and he only had one break point so that shows that his opponent served very well. Ysem has had a good fall season.

Even though he dropped his first match of the tournament, the trip to Michigan is not over for Cloer. He returns to the courts at the Varsity Tennis Center on Friday morning to face Boise State's Matias Silva. Silva lost to the number two seed, Mississippi State's Romain Ambert, 7-5, 6-2.

Box Score
#59 Pierrick Ysern (USD) def.
#22 Mat Cloer (FSU) 6-3, 6-1
