ORLANDO, Fla. - Junior Cristian Gonzalez Mendez is set to close out the fall season with in the semifinals of the USTA Clay Court Invitational at Disney on Sunday in the semifinals of the singles draw. After winning his quarterfinal match on Saturday, his 10:00 a.m. match at the ESPN World Wide of Sports Complex will air live on ESPN3 Sunday.
Gonzalez Mendez faced Carlos Bautista of Tulsa late Saturday morning in the quarterfinals of the main draw. The Santiago de Compostela, Spain, native quickly won his match 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals.
"I was excited to see Cristian back-up his big win yesterday with a really solid performance today," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "He held serve really well today and converted on some big break points. Cristian has had a really solid fall so far and we look forward to seeing what he can do tomorrow."
"Today was the day that I felt the most comfortable playing because my confidence level was high," said Gonzalez Mendez. "I reflected on my game, specifically my serve and my forehand which were very effective. I think my fitness has been very good so far and that helps me stay focused throughout the entire match."
In the doubles quarterfinals, senior Blake Davis and junior Dominic Cotrone lost 8-5 to UNF's Gomes and Zuern.
In the singles consolation bracket, Florida State went 4-4. Davis defeated Blake Bazarnak of Illinois 6-0, 6-4 while junior Benjamin Lock won 6-1, 6-3 over a junior from the USTA. Freshmen Jake Albo and Grayson Goldin both won their matches with Albo winning 2-6, 6-4, 10-7 over Matt Kirby of Tulsa and Goldin defeating Jesse Flores of UCF 6-3, 6-2.
In the doubles consolations, Albo and fellow freshman Jack Haffey won 8-7 (5) over USTA juniors.
