ORLANDO, Fla. - The Florida State men's tennis team advanced to both the singles and doubles quarterfinals of the USTA Clay Court Invitational at Disney on Friday. Saturday's matches begin for the Seminoles at 11:00 a.m. at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
In the round of 32, junior Cristian Gonzalez Mendez won 6-3, 6-4 over Michael Alford of Florida to get the Seminoles first win of the day. Freshman Grayson Goldin won his match 6-4, 6-4 against Kenny Sabacinski of Notre Dame.
"I was pleased with Cristian's match today and advancing to the quarterfinals," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "He has progress this fall nicely and has played some of his best college tennis. He likes the tournament here at Disney having won the B Draw last year. I'm pleased to have people in both the singles and doubles quarterfinals."
In the round of 16 Gonzalez Mendez was down 2-6, 1-4 to No. 50 Daniel Leitner of South Alabama. After getting back on track by coach Hultquist, he went to work to win the next five games to win the second set. In the third, he came out strong and won the match 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Gonzalez Mendez plays at 11:00 a.m. Saturday against Carlos Bautista of Tulsa.
"It's very easy to get discourage when you're down a set and down 1-4 in the second," said Gonzalez Mendez. "But during a changeover, coach said to me, `the match isn't over yet.' With that thought in mind and support from the stands, I felt motivated and pushed forward."
Goldin lost his match 7-6 (9), 6-0 to a junior in the USTA.
Florida State had two matches in the doubles round of 16 with senior Blake Davis and junior Dominic Cotrone defeating UCF's Jesse Flores and Amar Hromic 8-6. Junior Benjamin Lock and sophomore João Gauer lost 8-2 to Florida's Alford and Stephane Piro.
Cotrone and Davis, who are No. 5 in the country, play at 3:00 p.m. against Caio Gomes and Yannick Zuern of UNF.
Joining the No. 37 Florida State men's tennis team is No. 5 USC, No. 6 Tennessee, No. 8 Pepperdine, No. 16 Florida, No. 24 Illinois, No. 25 Tulsa, No. 31 Notre Dame, No. 71 UNF, Georgia Tech, UCF, South Alabama and top junior players from the USTA.
