TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State men's tennis team played two round of singles today and came out strong with four players advancing to the round of 16 at the Bedford Cup. After the fog rolled away in the morning, perfect playing conditions set in at the Scott Speicher Tennis Courts.

Today the team went 8-3 in singles with four players advancing to the round of 16.

"It was a good day today with the 8-3 record," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "It's a good follow-up from last weekend at Napa Valley. I was pleased we won three, three set matches today. It shows our conditioning has made strides. We're pleased to have four guys still in the tournament but we know we have more work to do tomorrow."

In his first match as a Seminole, freshman Grayson Goldin started his day off strong with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Adrian Reid of Florida Gulf Coast. The Bradenton, Fla., native lost his first set in the second round, but fought back to win his match 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 over Gerald Nickerson of FAU. He takes on Andrei Morin-Kougoucheff of FAU Friday at 10:30 a.m.

"I felt prepared from the training that we've been doing and felt like we were in great shape," said Goldin. "It felt great to represent my school and get my first two wins as a Seminole. I'm looking forward to our next matches tomorrow and can't wait to see how the rest of the team does."

Jose Gracia, a freshman from Delray Beach, Fla., won his first match at Florida State with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Florida A&M's Jalen Evans 6-4, 6-1. In the second round, he UNF's Jack Findel-Hawkins 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 and takes on Tannick Zuern of UNF at 10:30 a.m. Friday.

After receiving a bye in the first round, junior Cristian Gonzalez Mendez came out to beat Caio Gomez of UNF 6-1, 6-2. Friday he takes on Inaki Espindola of UCF at 10:30 a.m. Sophomore Michael Rinaldi also received a first round bye to defeat Admire Mushonga of Florida A&M 6-2, 6-1 and takes on UCF's Chris Barrus at 11:00 a.m. Friday.

Sophomore João Gauer won his first match of the day over Gilbert Rotich of Bethune-Cookman 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-2. In the second round, he fell to Stetson's Laurynas Antropikas 6-3, 6-4.

Freshman Jack Haffey (Naples, Fla.) won his first collegiate match with a 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-4 tough win over Bethune-Cookman's Joao Almeida in the first round. Haffey lost in the second round to Morin-Kougoucheff 6-1, 6-4.

Freshman Jake Albo lost in the first round in three sets to Cahit Kapukiran of Stetson 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The team plays doubles Friday beginning at 2:00 p.m. Friday.

Joining Florida State is eight other schools including Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, Miami, North Florida, Stetson and UCF.
