TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State's doubles team of senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) and sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) won in the first round of the Doubles NCAA Championships today. The duo will return to the courts tomorrow to play in the Round of 16.

"Connor and I just wanted to stick to the basics and not do anything too special for the first round doubles," said Mirzadeh. "We just wanted to play smart tennis and stay poised out there. We didn't really know anything about our opponents; it was our first time ever against them. We tried to get through the first round and we did."

The No. 13 doubles team defeated the No. 39 duo of Romain Bocaert and Lucas Viel of South Alabama 6-4, 6-4. Tomorrow's times will be released after play concludes tonight. The Seminoles will find out their opponent later tonight. They will face the No. 2 seed of Drew Courtney and Michael Shabaz of Virginia or No. 43 Mehdi Bouras and Bernard Schoeman of UNLV.

"I thought they played very well," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "I thought they especially played good off the return serve. They got up early in both sets and were able to close it out. We had a couple of really great scramble points and I thought the fight was really there today.'

The NCAA tournament is taking place at Stanford University in Stanford, Calif., at the Taube Family Tennis Center. The school has been hosting the team championships since May 19 and it continue through May 30 at the conclusion of singles and doubles finals.
