No. 14 Florida State Men's Tennis Start NCAA Tournament With 4-0 Victory Against Samford

May 10, 2008

Tallahassee, Fla.- The No. 14 ranked Florida State men's tennis team defeated Samford 4-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, May 10 at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.

"Early on I thought that they [Samford] were competing really well," FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said.  "I think our shot making and our conditioning paid of a little bit."

The Seminoles (20-6, 10-3) started strong winning two doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead.  The No. 15-ranked duo of sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone and freshman Clint Bowles defeated Hank Grant and Sam Huffman 8-3 on court number one.  The win tied the duo with Jeff Groslimond and Chris Westerhof on the single season double's victories list with 27.  On court three junior Drew Bailey and sophomore Brad Mixson beat the Bulldogs Renan Silveira and Kelvin DeWet 8-5 to clinch the point.  Bailey and Mixson won the last four games of the set to get the victory.

"They [Aubone and Bowles] have been pretty good all year," Hultquist said.  "They make a lot of balls, they volley very well and they make it difficult to get the ball back."

In singles, the Seminoles got a pair of 6-1, 6-1 victories to take a quick 3-0 lead.  On court four, junior Maciek Sykut defeated Samford's Brian Dushock and minutes later junior Chris Cloer followed suit with his win against Oliver Reynolds.

"It was big because that doesn't always happen with me," Sykut said.  "I wanted to set that tone for the rest of the team and get off the courts quickly."

Florida State finished off the match on court number two as the 85th-ranked Bowles defeated Samford's Jordan Delass 7-5, 6-2 to clinch victory for the Garnet and Gold.

"I was just trying to focus on what was happening on my court," Bowles said.  "There were several matches close to finishing, but I didn't let that distract me, I just did my thing."

The Seminoles will face the winner of the South Alabama versus Alabama match at 1:00 p.m.  The gates will open an hour before play begins.  Daily admission to Scott Speicher Center is $5 for adults and $3 for students. Concessions will be available upstairs, which means patrons will not be allowed to bring their own food and beverages into the stands.
