TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 16-ranked Florida State men’s tennis team’s senior class showed why they are one of the best in the history of the program leading the Seminoles to a 7-0 victory against Maryland at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on Friday evening.
“Maryland was in a tough position because they had a couple of starters out,” FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “Sometimes when you get in a situation like that you can let up, but I though our guys did a good job of staying focused and winning quick.”
FSU (17-7, 7-2) dominated singles play winning every match in straight sets. Senior Drew Bailey led the way defeating Graham Knowlton 6-1, 6-0 on court five. No. 49-ranked Clint Bowles followed Bailey’s lead on court two with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Mathias Sarrazin. The Garnet and Gold’s third victory came from senior Chris Cloer who dominated Roshon Potarazu 6-3, 6-0 on court six. Senior Maciek Sykut clinched the match for Florida State on court three with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Boris Fetbroyt 6-4, 6-2. The senior’s three victories were fitting for FSU considering they were honored during the match for their four years of play for the Noles.
“I thought Drew was excellent tonight, hardly made any errors; he’s put in a lot of work and he’s playing the best tennis of his career,” Hultquist said. “Chris got off quick and Maciek clinched the match for us. It was a great performance.”
In doubles the teams split the first two matches with Maryland’s Sarrazin and Nielsen beating freshmen Chris Reiman and Owen Long 8-5 on court two and Bailey and Sykut defeating Fetbroyt and Askanov 8-4 on court one. FSU clinched the match on court three when juniors Michael O’Shea and Keith Embree defeated Potarzu and Arman Moussavi 8-4.
“I thought it was good for those guys who don’t play a lot to get out there and win,” Hultquist said. “It was also important for our starters to be out there supporting and encouraging those guys.”
Next up for Florida State is its final regular season match against Boston College on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. For live stats and a match recap log onto www.seminoles.com.
