COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Seminole freshmen stepped up play this afternoon to help the No. 28 Florida State men's tennis team (16-4, 7-0) top Maryland (4-12, 1-5) 4-3 and remain undefeated in ACC play. After today's, March 30, win at the Cole Field House Tennis Courts, the past four wins have been clinched by a freshman.

"I thought the team did well today to win despite very tough cold, windy conditions," said Benjamin Lock. "Jordan (Kelly-Houston) and Blake (Davis) did really well in their doubles match. Everyone showed great spirit and fight. We just have to focus on good preparations this week for a big weekend ahead."

Playing in cold, windy weather the two teams came out in doubles. On court one, junior Jordan Kelly-Houston and sophomore Blake Davis were down 4-0 against the No. 24 duo of Maros Horny and John Collins. Kelly-Houston and Davis fought back and won the match 8-6. Today's win marks the duos 10th win of the season.

On court three, junior Andres Bucaro and freshman Benjamin Lock battled back and forth with Maryland's Andy Magee and Jesse Kiuru. Bucaro and Lock won 8-5 and are 16-3 on the year with a 6-1 mark in the ACC.

"I thought doubles was very tight," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "I thought one of the keys was that Jordan (Kelly-Houston) and Blake (Davis) were down 4-0 and came back to win against a ranked team. After they won, Benjamin (Lock) and Andres (Bucaro) clinched it. They were up 6-5, broke serve and served it out. It was important to get the doubles point."

After clinching doubles, the teams returned to the courts for singles play. The first set was split with each team nabbing three wins. Maryland tied the match up when Horny defeated Kelly-Houston 6-3, 6-3 on court one.

The Seminoles then won two matches to make the score 3-1. Freshman Cristian Gonzalez Mendez topped Collins 6-3, 6-2 on court four which makes him 4-1 in the ACC. Bucaro topped Kiuru on court three 6-3, 6-4 to move up to 16-1 on the year and 6-1 in the ACC.

At that point, Davis fell to Vlad Stefan on court two 6-4, 6-4 to make the score 3-2. With the match on the line, the match point came down to senior Jason Zafiros on court five and Lock on court six. After losing his first set, Zafiros fought back to win his second set and keep the team alive.

Lock won his first set in a tiebreaker against Mathias Sarrazin. In the second set, Lock needed little time as he went on to win his match and clinch for the team. He won 7-6 (3), 6-2. Lock is now 9-2 on the season and 4-1 in the ACC. This is also the fourth match he's clinched all year. Zafiros would go on to lose in a tiebreaker against Tommy Laine 6-0, 4-6, 3-2 (5).

"In singles Benjamin's first set went to a tiebreaker," described Hultquist. "I thought it was important to get that. Two of our guys won quickly and Jason (Zafiros) fought back. He put us in position to where we could fight back. Benjamin (Lock) clinched the match which puts us in good position against top teams the next two weeks."

The Seminoles close out their home matches with Senior Day with a Friday, April 6th bout against Duke and a Sunday noon match against North Carolina. Follow the team on twitter at twitter.com/fsu_mtennis.
