MALIBU, Calif.- The No. 16 Florida State men's tennis team lost a 3-0 lead to No. 12 Pepperdine, but pulled out a 4-3 victory on Thursday evening in Malibu, Calif., thanks to the heroics of junior Vahid Mirzadeh.

"You don't know how things will play out but it's a win that will be strong all season," FSU head coach Dwyane Hultquist said. "This win puts us in a pretty good position when it comes to hosting a regional at the end of the year, but we've got a long season to go."

The match came down to court four where Mirzadeh was playing Pepperdine's Mahmoud Kamel. The pair split the first two sets 6-4, 4-6 and the Wellington, Fla., native went down 3-1 in the third. Mirzadeh was able to rally to win six out of the last eight games of the match to get his first three set victory of the season.

"Vahid was down 3-1 in the third and he made a great comeback," Hultquist said. "He served really well and hit some great shots. This is his first season of collegiate tennis and I'm really proud of the way he came through for us."

The Seminoles jumped out to a 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point. Seniors Drew Bailey and Maciek Sykut made quick work out of Hugh Clarke and Alex Llompart on court two with an 8-3 victory. FSU clinched the point on court three when sophomore Clint Bowles and freshman Chris Reiman defeated Kamel and Stuart Keplar 8-4. In the match on court one, junior Jean-Yves Aubone and Mirzadeh were defeated by No. 8 Omar Altmann and Bassam Beidas 8-5.

"I thought that we played very good doubles," Hultquist said. "Drew and Mciek were dominant today to control the match and we did a good job breaking serve and three."

Florida State made the match 2-0 on court five when senior Chris Cloer made quick work of the Wave's Clarke. Cloer won the first set 6-4 and then cruised to a 6-0 second set victory. No. 42-ranked Bowles made the score 3-0 with his upset victory against No. 39 Altmann on court two. Bowles won his match in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 for his third consecutive victory.

"Chris got us going by winning his match while some guys were still in their first sets which is something he is capable of doing when he's on a roll," Hultquist said. "Clint beat a great player and rose to the occasion of play to stay in control. He never let his opponent into the match."

Pepperdine got its first point of the match on court three where Llompart defeated Sykut in straight sets 6-1, 7-6(3). The Wave followed up that victory with their second point on court six when Alex Moreno defeated Bailey 7-6(3), 6-2. Pepperdine tied the match on court one after No. 43 Beidas upset No. 28 Aubone. The three set match ended 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

The Seminoles will have a week off before they finish their five match road trip as they travel to North Carolina to take on Duke and UNC on March 20 and 22. For live stats and meet recaps log onto www.seminoles.com.
