TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 18 Florida State men's tennis team continued its winning ways with a 5-2 victory over Furman. This marks the 20th consecutive win over the Paladins dating all the way back to 1989. The Seminoles (5-1) lost the doubles point but came back strong in singles to win.

"I think Furman does a great job being in a non-BCS conference-," explained head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "They're always in the rankings, competing hard. I think for a smaller college they do a great job. Paul (Scarpa) is the winningest coach in college right now."

The No. 31 duo of senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) and freshman Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) won its fifth match of the year. They easily won on court one 8-2 over Chris Motes and Chris Rhyne. Courts two and third consisted of doubles teams in their first matches together but did not win.

In singles play, the Seminoles got back on track winning five matches with No. 27 Jean-Yves Aubone (Miami, Fla.) clinching the win for his teammates. The senior won 6-2, 6-3 over Chris Motes on court two. On court three No. 23 junior Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) won 6-2, 6-2 over Jordan Walters.

Mirzadeh won is seventh singles victory of the year 6-3, 6-4. With his triumph over Sawyer Duncan, he is now 3-0 on court one this season. Mirzadeh, Aubone and Bowles have all won three singles in a row after today.

"I've been winning a lot of matches," said Mirzadeh. "I'm feeling really confident out there on the court with Connor in doubles as well as singles. I'm not really trying to think too much about it. I'm just playing good tennis and trying to be more positive then I have been in past years."

Freshman Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) won his fifth match of the season against Andrew Mellow. With his 6-1, 6-2 victory, the freshmen are now 19-4 on the season in singles play.

"I was everything a `Nole should be today," explained Reed. "I had a lot of energy in our doubles match earlier but we ended up losing that. I didn't let the lose affect me; I carried my energy level into the beginning of my match. It intimidated my opponent letting him know the losw in doubles didn't matter and I was ready to play singles which changed the momentum of my match."

Freshman Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand) got another victory winning 6-3, 6-2 over Andre Chvetsov on court five. Kelly-Houston played in his first collegiate match yesterday against the Bulls and is now 2-0.

"Our ACC season is getting ready to start and in the ACC season we're going to have to continue to get better," said Hultquist. "I look in the ACC and virtually everybody is capable of making the NCAA tournament. We're getting our freshmen adjusted to playing. It's been good having Jordan (Kelly-Houston) in the line-up getting wins the last two days. I think he's going to be a strong player for us."

The Seminoles travel to Milford, NH for its first ACC match of the year against Boston College on February 10th. The Seminoles next home match is February 21st at 1:00pm against Georgia Tech.
