TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Head coach Trey Jones with the Florida State men's golf team, which is currently ranked 21st by GolfStat, signed three outstanding players- Jack Maguire, Joshua Lee and Anthony Alex to National Letters of Intent during the November signing period. All three players are expected to challenge for playing time immediately upon their arrival for the fall 2013 semester.
"Each year our goal is to sign young men who will represent our university in a high manner while achieving in the classroom and on the golf course," said Jones. "I am confident that we have done that in this recruiting class. As a group what stands out to me is that they play hard golf courses well. While they will be joining several talented returning players I look for these guys to compete to make a positive contribution next fall. Each is good students who are coming here build on the tradition and begin their legacy as a Seminole golfer."
Maguire, a native of St. Petersburg, won the Florida 2A State high school Championship at St. Pete High School and the St. Augustine Amateur, both in 2012, and also finished in 10th at the AJGA 2012 Rolex Tournament of Champion. Maguire is currently ranked 5 nationally and 2nd in the state of Florida. His brother MJ plays golf for UNF.
"Few players had a better summer and fall than Jack Maguire," said Jones. "In a short period this summer Jack has proven he is one of the top junior players in the country as he was selected to the Wyndam Cup team by the AJGA. Jack's strengths are his ball striking and competitive spirit. These are two great variables that give him an opportunity to be a great player for Florida State. "
Lee, from Orange Park, Fla., won the US Junior Amateur qualifier in Athens, GA and finished in fifth place in the 2012 GolfWeek East Coast Junior Championship as well as in third place in the 2011 Junior Jones Cup Invitational. Lee currently attends Fleming Island High School and is 4th in the state of Florida and 52nd in the nation.
"Joshua is a very consistent player as he has posted 10 top 10 finishes in the past year. As with most consistent players Josh drives the ball very well. He has had most of his success on tough courses, as he played well at the State Junior at Sawgrass CC, Junior Jones Cup at the Seaside course at Sea Island, GA. The adjustment to college will not be a physical one for Josh as he is as fit as any junior golfer in the country."
Alex was the winner in three tournaments during 2012; the AJGA Woodward Video Junior, the AJGA Golf Pride Junior Classic by an impressive five shots as well as the US Junior Amateur qualifier in New Jersey. Alex is No. 3 in Florida and No. 28 in the nation. He attended Wayne Hills High School in New Jersey before moving to St. Augustine in August.
"Anthony brings in an impressive academic and golf resume," concluded Jones. "There are very few prep players with two AJGA wins in Open events. Anthony has shown that he can shoot low numbers on good golf courses and he knows how to win. He has great rhythm with his long game and putts the ball well."
