CARMEL, Ind. - After two rounds on Monday, the Florida State men's golf team is in second place of the Crooked Stick Intercollegiate only three strokes behind first place Georgia. With two players in the top five, the Seminoles are ready to improve in the third round on Tuesday.

"I am proud of the way we competed today," said head coach Trey Jones. "Having a chance to win going into the final round tomorrow was one of our goals. Due to NCAA rules it is impossible to prepare for a 36 hole day. We have four freshmen here that have never done that before and they wore down mentally and physically."

Freshman Jack Maguire continues to make an impact on the team as he made Florida State's first ace since 2008 by Drew Kittleson. In the first round he made his hole in one on the 13th hole.

"I hit a 7 iron from 173 yards out and hit it pretty easy with a three yard fade," said Maguire. "I couldn't see it go in but I saw it bounce once. I saw the Georgia coach throw his hands up and that's when I knew."

Leading the team and tied for third place is sophomore Rowin Caron. After a 74 in the first round, he followed up with a 1-under 71 in the second. In the first round he had two bogeys in the front nine but managed to make two birdies on the back. In the second round he posted five birdies and is four strokes out of first place.

Maguire, who is in fifth place, led the tournament after the first round. He made four birdies to go with his 13th hole ace and finished the round with a 2-under 70. In the second round, he had a rough time on the last six holes with four bogeys, including one on the 13th, to finish the round 4-over.

Another freshman who played hard today was Cristobal Del Solar. At one point during the first round, he was leading the tournament until a triple bogey on 18 halted him to finish 3-over. Del Solar gained some strokes back in the second round with an eagle on the ninth hole to finish the round 1-over and is tied for 11th.

Freshman Anthony Alex is tied for 15th with a 5-over 149 on the day. He posted four birdies including three in the first round. Freshman Josh Lee is tied for 51st with a 12-over 156.

No. 31 Florida State is joined by No. 6 Georgia, No. 24 Arkansas, No. 46 Florida, No. 49 TCU, Indiana, Ball State, Eastern Michigan, IUPUI, Kansas, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Purdue and Toledo. The team tees off at 10:10 a.m. on Monday from the first hole.
