TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State men's golf team started the Brickyard Collegiate Championships with a 3-over 291 and is tied for sixth, only nine strokes back from first place Georgia. The Seminoles tee off Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the Brickyard by Riverside.

"It was a perfect day for scoring," said head coach Trey Jones. "Our four counting scores (Caron, Maguire, Del Solar and Lee) made a total of 16 birdies to shot 3-over. Georgia Tech made 14 birdies and an eagle, they had the same amount of under par holes but beat us by nine shots on the day. We need to execute better and do a better job around the greens. We continue to learn from each round and work on improving with each player."

Playing only sophomores and freshmen, the young team is led by Rowin Caron who started the day with a birdie on hole one. Troubled with a double bogey on the eighth hole, the sophomore proceeded to make three more birdies on the day to sit tied for 13th with a 1-under 71, six strokes behind Georgia's Keith Mitchell who is leading the tournament.

Freshman Jack Maguire shot an even par 72 and is tied for 18th after finishing the day with a birdie on the 18th. Redshirt freshman Cristobal Del Solar was in fifth place until the last six holes when he posted four birdies to finish the day. He is currently tied for 33rd along with freshman Josh Lee. Lee posted a 4-over on the front nine, but finished the back nine 2-under. Both freshmen carded a 2-over 74.

Playing as an individual, freshman Anthony Alex made a strong debut in the garnet and gold as he finished the day with a 1-over 73 and is tied for 27th. Sophomore Hank Lebioda closed out the Seminoles with a 7-over 79.

No. 23 Florida State is joined by No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 Georgia Tech, No. 13 GRU Augusta, No. 14 Virginia Tech, No. 27 USF, Boston College, Chattanooga, Furman, Georgia State, Gonzaga, Louisville, Mercer and Princeton. Air Force was originally scheduled to compete, but their entry was canceled due to the government shutdown.
