NEW LONDON, N.C. - In perfect weather, the No. 19 Florida State men's golf team posted another 4-under 284 and is now 8-under after two rounds. The Seminoles are in second place, only two strokes behind Georgia Tech. The Seminoles tee off at 11:30 Sunday at the Old North State Club.
"One of our goals coming into the tournament, with this talented group of people in North Carolina, is we've got to have a chance to win going into tomorrow," said head coach Trey Jones. "If we play a great round of golf tomorrow, who knows what will happen. We've done what we've wanted to do up to this point and I'm proud of the guys for that."
Florida State had a strong performance on day two with all five golfers carding an even par 72 or better. Sophomore Hank Lebioda, redshirt-freshman Cristobal Del Solar and freshman Jack Maguire are all in the top 10 after 36 holes.
"Early on today our younger players, our freshmen, lost some patience but managed to stay in there," continued Jones. "What I'm most happy with is we threw out an even par, an even par was our high round. All our guys feel good about their games going into tomorrow and that's what it's going to take, it's going to take five guys to go out there and do that. If we play loose and free, who knows what's going to happen."
Lebioda made two birdies on the back nine to secure his 1-under 71 and is in third place with a 139, only four strokes out of first place. Maguire posted three birdies on the day with one coming on the eighth hole. With his second shot landing on the fringe of the green, Maguire chipped his shot in from 30 feet away. He sits tied for ninth with a 143.
Del Solar finished the day with a 72 and has a two-day total of 143 and is tied for ninth. On the 16th hole, Del Solar hit an amazing second shot with the ball landing about a foot from the hole. He tapped the ball in for his last birdie of the day.
Sophomore Rowin Caron carded the best round of the day with a 2-under 70. He started the morning strong with a birdie on the second hole and posted all par scores through the 10th hole. Caron made two more birdies and was sitting at 3-under until the 16th hole when his ball made an unfortunate bounce off a rake and into the water. He rebounded from the double bogey with a birdie on 18 to finish strong. He moved up 18 spots and is tied for 25th.
Senior Joaquin Lolas carded a 72 on Sunday and sits tied for 19th with a 1-over 145 after two rounds. After a 2-over 38 on the front nine, he started the back nine with back-to-back birdies on 11 and 12. Lolas also found success on sixteen with his second shot landing five feet from the pin and putted it in for birdie.
