AUBURN, AL--The Florida State golf team is in third place after the first round of the Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate at the Saugahatchee Country Club. The Seminoles fired a team score of 290 and trail second-place Auburn by seven shots. The Seminoles are coming off their first victory of the year at the U.S. Collegiate Championships last week. Senior George McNeill carded an opening-round 69 to stand alone in fourth place, two strokes behind leader Michael Morrison of Georgia. Mark Monroe continued to play steady on Friday with a first-round even-par 72. Monroe is tied for 11th. Barry Dyche stood two-under through nine, but finished the day at one-over at 73 and tied for 14th. Jason Pool, a senior from Great Falls, VA, opened the tournament with a 76 and is tied for 39th. Nathan Bertsch rounded out the Seminole scoring with a round of 77. The University of Georgia leads second-place Auburn by five strokes after one round of play. Morrison of Georgia has a one stroke advantage over teammate Ryuji Imada and Scott Weatherly of Auburn. The second round of the tournament will take place tomorrow morning.
